A look at where eight different power rankings rank the Cowboys and the rest of the NFC East

The last-second loss to the Packers dropped the Cowboys to 2-3. As we look at the Cowboys' playoff chances, they might squeeze into the tournament with a 9-7 record, but it's much more likely that they'll need a 10-6 record to secure a playoff spot - unless they find a way to win the division outright.

That 10-6 record will require the Cowboys to go 8-3 the rest of the way, but can they? Last year's team could have done that, and the Cowboys now have the bye week to figure out just what they need to do to play at last year's level again.


Chicago Tribune - No. 9 (LW: 9)

Jason Garrett should know better than to give Aaron Rodgers the ball back with 73 seconds remaining and one timeout.

ESPN - No. 9 (LW: 12)

16.9 percent chance. The Cowboys peaked at a 71.5 percent chance of making the playoffs following their Week 1 win. There's still plenty of season left for Dallas, which will regroup during its Week 6 bye.

America's Team totally got Aaron Rodgers'd on Sunday. That's the difference between 2-3 and 3-2 right now. A big match-up with the Commanders looms in three weeks but, for now, they get two weeks to prepare for the 49ers.

NFL.com - No. 18 (LW: 19)

They can't close games out. Yes, Ezekiel Elliott and the ground attack seemed to do precisely that against the Packers on Sunday -- but Dak Prescott's score to give the Cowboys a three-point lead came with over a minute left. Between that much clock and a timeout in his hip pocket, Aaron Rodgers had all he needed. Because Dallas doesn't have closers on defense. This is where first-round pick Taco Charlton (no sacks) was supposed to help. At least David Irving (two sacks) was back out there creating pressure. Rough loss.

The Cowboys are below .500 and two games behind the Eagles in the NFC East heading into their bye week. They also could lose RB Ezekiel Elliott at any time if a federal appeals court lifts the injunction that is keeping his six-game suspension on hold. This is not at all how things were supposed to be going, is it? In retrospect, the Cowboys needed to take more time off the clock before scoring their late go-ahead TD Sunday — they know as well as anyone by now that you simply cannot give Aaron Rodgers that much time to beat you. He will.
