The Chiefs, the sole unbeaten team in the league, climb into the top spot in the NFL Power Rankings as teams head into Week 8 of the 2013 season. They are joined on the podium by the Seahawks and the Broncos.
The biggest gainers are the Chargers, Jets, and Panthers, who all move up after wins over the weekend.

Are they the best team in the league? Well, if you are what your record says you are, it is difficult to argue, and now their biggest obstacle, the Denver Peyton Mannings, have been exposed. A tenacious D and old-fashioned attack is going a long way, and Andy Reid might think about clearing some space for Coach of the Year awards. (Tom)

Seattle CB Richard Sherman said he thinks that not only does Seattle have the NFL’s best secondary collectively, but the Seahawks have the best individual players at each of the four secondary positions. He may have been exaggerating a little with the second point, but not by much. (OCC)

The Saints enjoyed their bye-week as they watched the Broncos and Patriots stumble - not that those two teams matter to the Saints in any way outside of these power rankings. The Saints lead their division by 2.5 games, the largest lead of any division leader in the league. (OCC)

The Colts have shown that they can not only beat the league's best teams, but beat them convincingly. Oh, and they, not the Commanders or Seahawks, have the NFL's next great quarterback. (Rabble)

The early-season hype has been all about the Chiefs, Broncos and Patriots, but the 49ers have now won their last four games and dispatched the Titans in convincing fashion. They now head to London where they'll put the Jaguars to shame. Watch the 49ers. (OCC)

Even the return of the great Gronk and his 18 targets couldn't right the Tom Brady ship. Brady has just one touchdown in his last three games and just a 55.4 completion percentage, the lowest of his career by 5 percentage points. (KD)

The Packers are running out of receiving options after a scary injury to Jermichael Finley, but got some help from Detroit and Chicago, whose losses mean the Packers now have a half-game lead in the NFC North. (OCC)

Don't look now, but that roller coaster is on an upswing. Dallas goes to Detroit with a chance to move to 5-0 in the NFC, which would bode very well for their playoff chances down the line. They need a couple of wins against above .500 teams before people believe, however. Will this be the week? (KD)

The Jaguars will make any team look good right now, and the Chargers took full advantage of their opponent this week, cruising to a win with an effort that would not have been enough in most other NFL stadiums. An injury to King Dunlap depletes their patchwork O-line even more, but they have a bye week to work on their line. (OCC)

The Detroit Lions continue to keep producing highlight tapes for Sports Center, but also keep dropping games. Dallas is coming to Motor City next week, and then the Lions have their bye-week. After starting the season 4-2, there's a good chance they could slip to 4-4. (OCC)

While the Jets' offense is frighteningly inconsistent, the Jets' defense has kept games close in six out of seven games. Whether it'll be enough to compensate for Smith's frequent Mark Sanchez impersonations remains to be seen, but for now they are one game behind the Patriots, and they'll be tough to play all year. The Panthers have outscored the Giants, Vikings and Rams by 103-25, which makes them the darling of stat-based rankings, but are the Panthers for real? Their defense certainly is, allowing only 13.8 points in six contests, second only to the Chiefs. (OCC)

The Bears, much like they did in 2012, started quickly but have begun an October fade. If Cutler misses any extended time, that fade could well turn to a plummet. (Rabble)

The Ravens have lost three of their last four games. After the loss against the Steelers, Terrell Suggs said the Ravens are "at a state of emergency now," and the Ravens have a bye-week coming up in which they can try to figure out what to do about that emergency. (OCC)

The Dolphins had two weeks to prepare for the Buffalo Bills, and came up empty. That does not bode well for the immediate future for the Dolphins, who have now dropped three straight. (OCC)

The Titans lost their third straight game even with Jake Locker back - Locker had missed two games with a sprained right hip and knee - and now have a bye week to figure out how to turn things around if they want to stay in the race for what looks like the final AFC wildcard. (OCC)

The Browns have two outstanding receiving options in WR Josh Gordon and TE Jordan Cameron. Yet only two of Brandon Weeden's 20 pass attempts in the first three quarters went their way on Sunday. You won't win a lot of ball games that way. (OCC)

No matter how innovative Chip Kelly might be (and the jury is still out on that question), when I watch them play, the old coaching phrase that Joey reminded us of - "It's not about the Xs and Os, but the Jimmies and Joes" - resonates in my mind. They have a deluxe talent at running back, a good deep receiver, a couple of promising D-linemen, and little else. The real question in Philly isn't about QB, but about talent evaluation, which had been sub-par since Joe Banner was deposed a few seasons back. (Rabble)

The Bills ended a streak of six straight road losses with their win in Miami, but it may have been their last win in a while as they travel to New Orleans next, host the Chiefs after that and then play in Pittsburgh. (OCC)

Too little, too late? The Falcons put up 31 points on the 0-6 Buccaneers, but that probably doesn't mean much. The Eagles also put up 31 against the Bucs a week ago and then only managed three points against a team with a winning record. The Falcons' lousy defense and non-existent pass rush will soon end their postseason aspirations. (OCC)

Carson Palmer now has 13 interceptions, second only to Eli Manning's 15, and has five straight games with multiple interceptions, the first QB to do so since Vinny Testaverde in 2000. It's a small miracle the Cardinals have three wins this season, and the Cardinals can thank their defense for that. (OCC)

The Steelers haven't been able to score more than 19 points in four of their six games this season, and until they find ways to score they'll remain at the bottom of their division. (OCC)

Although they have a lot of young talent and have eked out a few early-season wins, the Rams look to be lost. Certainly Sam Bradford is - for the season. The good news? With the Commanders' first-rounder in their back pocket, St. Louis might well get two top-ten selections in the upcoming draft. (Rabble)

The Texans have lost five straight games, are down to their third QB, and just released three players (including 2013 third-round pick Sam Montgomery). What's next, players only meetings and candlelight vigils? Houston is in complete disarray. (OCC)

The Commanders are allowing 30.7 points per game, the fourth highest value in the league. Occasionally, their offense is going to pull out a win like the 45-41 win over the Bears on Sunday. But that won't happen often enough for the Commanders to remain relevant in 2013. (OCC)

At the start of the season, the Raiders were widely pegged to be one of the worst teams in the league. They haven't been that, not by a long shot. But as pleasant a surprise as Terrelle Pryor has been, the team still has issues, and the tough remaining schedule will make it hard for the raiders to add more wins to their W/L column. (OCC)

It's not that the Giants played a particularly good game, but they finally played a clean one. Eli Face avoided throwing an interception for the first time in 2013, and despite averaging 2 yards a run and 5 yards a pass attempt, they are finally in the win column. Still no pass rush, though. (KD)

Leslie Frazier is making a drastic case that he is not meant for the head coaching life. Or maybe his front office is interfering. 12 days after Josh Freeman was brought into town, he's starting and Adrian Peterson gets 13 carries in a game where the Giants only led by 3 midway through the third quarter. Freeman made Nick Foles look accurate.(KD)

The Jaguars might have the first pick in the draft locked up if it weren't for the abysmally bad Bucs. Greg Schiano is displaying a remarkable ability to waste talent and alienate players and fans alike. This is a team in full melt down mode, and the news seemingly gets worse every week. (Tom)

Even among the winless dregs, the Jaguars have a special, lowly place reserved. This is a truly bad team, perhaps worse than the 0-16 Lions. (Rabble)
