The NFL is ready to fight the latest ruling in the Ezekiel Elliott case.

The ruling on Friday of a preliminary injunction on behalf of the NFLPA and Ezekiel Elliott will be challenged by the NFL. They are initially asking the judge who issued the injunction, Amos Mazzant, for an emergency stay of his decision.

ESPN describes the next steps:

On Monday, Mazzant did order the NFL Players Association to file a response to the NFL's request for a stay by Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET. The NFL will have until 6 p.m. Friday to file its response.

If the judge will not reverse his decision, it's not clear how quickly an appeal will be heard. If Mazzant's initial decision is overturned, then Elliott's suspension could go into effect immediately.

If the stay is denied by Judge Mazzant, then the appeal in the 5th Circuit Court will be the next step, but that could take a while to be heard.

The one thing that's not clear is when the Fifth Circuit might rule on the case. The circuit court moves very slowly, which means we might not see a ruling for months. If the court ruled in the NFL's favor and the Cowboys' season was already over, then Elliott would potentially start serving his suspension in 2018.

Elliott’s injunction would allow him to play until the case is heard in court. If the stay is denied, that injunction would remain in effect until the appeal is heard. The NFL is fighting to get the suspension enforced immediately.

Elliott had a strong game against the Giants on Sunday night. He totaled 104 yards rushing and 36 yards receiving. After the game Elliott finally spoke to reporters.

After the Cowboys' 19-3 season-opening win against the Giants, Elliott spoke to reporters for the first time since June and expressed relief that he would get "a chance to prove my innocence." He said he was "just happy that I'll get to be with the guys for as long as permitted and not miss time and not having to be away from them."
