Next offseason we’ll be back for the next round of Dak negotiations.

It has been over a month since the franchise tag deadline passed and the Dallas Cowboys were unable to reach a long-term agreement with their quarterback Dak Prescott. As a result of the failed negotiations, Dak will play the 2020 season on the franchise tag he already signed and be paid $31.4M. There are obviously worse situations to be in, but it goes without saying that Dak wants a long-term deal.

It also goes without saying that the Cowboys want their quarterback locked up long-term, but wanting is only half of the battle. For whatever reason, the Cowboys were unable to agree with Dak’s representation - CAA and Todd France.

Now there is something interesting news on that front. CAA and Todd France have officially parted ways.

Why is this significant and what does it have to do with the Cowboys and/or Dak, you ask? Again, Dak is represented by CAA and his agent is Todd France. The fact that those two parties are no longer working together is quite important.

We obviously don’t know what is next for Todd France but it makes sense that he would continue to work in the industry. Wherever he ends up it is possible that Dak chooses to follow him and keep him as his representation, or perhaps Dak will want to stick with CAA as a whole. For what it’s worth, a similar situation befell Amari Cooper last year and Cooper stayed with his agent.

You might recall that Prescott originally hired Todd France back in 2018 as he was knocking on the door of eligibility for his first non-rookie contract deal. Two offseasons have past since then and Dak still doesn’t have that contract, but he was not the only Todd France client to stay on the franchise tag this offseason which was a subject that drew plenty of attention.

There are a lot of things that have to happen between now and when conversations will resume between Dak and the Cowboys. Hopefully that a lot includes the team winning the Super Bowl, but either way this story just took an interesting turn.
