The Dallas Cowboys are going to be facing some tough decisions when it comes down to 53-man roster time. The latest preseason win against the Indianapolis Colts helped the cases for some, and hurt them for others.

Let’s get hypothetical and say that we’re locked in with 52 roster spots. Within that set are the obvious guys plus Rico Gathers and Rod Smith. Say you have one spot left and you’re down to Cooper Rush and Noah Brown. Who do you choose?

The case for Cooper Rush

The legend of Cooper Rush has grown significantly over the preseason, and anyone with eyes can tell you that he’s seemingly more equipped to be the man backing up Dak Prescott (Dak-ing up Dak? Anyone?).

Yes, his snaps are against players that likely won’t be on the 53-man squad this fall, but the Central Michigan product brings more to the Cowboys offense than the current QB2 on the roster. Throughout this preseason, Rush has been making a strong argument to be the Dallas Cowboys’ primary backup quarterback this fall.

He may just turn out to be another preseason star, but Cooper Rush looks to be the Dallas Cowboys best option on the roster if something were to happen to Dak Prescott. Cooper Rush’s potential, combined with Kellen Moore’s limitations, makes the undrafted rookie an intriguing option behind Dak.

Cooper has been fantastic through three preseason games, but as our own Cole Patterson notes - this is the preseason. As true as that is, Kellen Moore has been terrible in the same light of opportunity. This is no longer just a cute little project, this is indisputable data.

Keep Rush. We have plenty of receivers and a potential starting QB is worth all but the best WR.

No reason to keep 5 RB's. No reason to keep 4 TE's, No reason to keep Moore either probably but I am not convinced that Cooper against 3rd stringers is the real deal yet either. Honestly, I doubt many NFL GM's are that impressed yet either - to Cowboy fans however, Moore is really playing poorly so the comparison is real.

I would keep Brown for sure though.

The true test would be to let Cooper play the first quarter of the next pre-season game with the starters. Won't happen, but at least it would give you a glimpse of what it might be.

Can this team win games with Moore? I have perused the schedule and do not see any 4A high school teams this season. So the answer is no.

If Dak goes down, the back-up could very well be sitting in an NBC broadcast booth on Sundays. Rush will learn as the back-up. And since this team couldn't win in the Texas State Highschool play-offs with Moore, what is the difference between Moore and Rush since both would lose?

.

You heard it here first fellas, Chris Collinsworth might come out of retirement and switch positions to boot.

In all seriousness, the Cowboys have some very tough decisions when it comes to filling out the 53. They are going to have to carry some defensive linemen they would otherwise likely cut to deal with the suspensions. Neither Rush or Noah Brown will make it to the practice squad without being claimed. If they would grow a pair and cut #17 then they may could have them all... but between Duke Thomas and a few other secondary players making a case for themselves who wouldn't have been thought to initially make the team, going 4 deep at tight end, possibly going 6 deep at WR, and possibly going 4 deep at RB.....well, something's got to give. I can almost guarantee you they don't go 3 deep at QB. Hopefully this means cutting Moore and letting Rush be backup and only worrying about a vet or another body if Dak goes down for more than a game or two.

I would be surprised if Cooper Rush would be brought on to anyones 53 man roster. I think at this point he would clear waivers and make it to the practice squad. Brown probably would too but I like him.

You'd be wrong.

Plus the fact I think some other team would snap Noah up on their 53 man roster as a sixth receiver to develop because of his NFL measurable's.....

Did you see how fast the receiver-starved Jets scooped up Lucky Whitehead when they cut him (amidst the controversy)? Noah Brown would be picked up in a second.

And the next thing people would say to help themselves feel better is that "guys like Noah Brown are a dime a dozen". Despite it being untrue.

It would be nice to see Rush become a great back up over the next 2 years and trade him for a top 15 first rounder.

You find a way to keep both, Cooper Rush and Noah Brown are both young and their potential is very high. Moore is not so young and his potential is nil. Would not hesitate to cut guys like Wilson, Durant, Wilber or Looney as well. Cowboys can always re-sign Durant if they need him, no one else is interested.

You keep the QB who's outperforming everybody's expectation for a team that lacks an entrenched starter instead of the WR6/7 who's battling for a roster spot, anyway.

What do I win?

Rush, by a long shot. I like Brown but QB is just a much more important position and we are good at WR anyway. Not so much the case with the backup QB spot.

Remember we have a backup QB that's not on the roster and someone people seem to have forgotten about - #9

It would not be responsible to count on Romo coming back. Team has to prepare as if he won't.

Qbs are worth more and harder to find..so I keep Rush for that reason.
You could even develop and trade him for a bunch of picks if necessary.
