BTB: Prince Amukamara As A Free Safety?

That is your opinion, It is very common to see high drafted CB starting day 1 Newman himself started day 1. I would love to keep every guy but you don't pay that kind of money to a backup player and if Prince or Peterson is drafted they will not be sitting on the bench.

1. His contract is fact, not opinion. It is also a fact that most fans are exaggerating how prohibitive it is.

2. I never said a rookie CB wouldn't start. I said it would be stupid to rely on a rookie...especially by cutting your current best CB when your #2 is coming off of a terrible (understatement) season. Dumb isn't a strong enough word.

3. Newman is better than Jenkins. Why in god's name would Newman be sitting on the bench?

4. You're putting entirely too much emphasis on salary and where the player was drafted. At what point do you want to get your best players on the field?

... your scenario doesn't do that.

The Cowboys had nothing at corner when they drafted Newman so he had to play plus I think (could be wrong) the rule where corners were prohibited from jamming receivers after 5 yards wasn't adopted yet.

Playing corner in the NFL has gotten more difficult with all the passing teams do and the 3-4 WR sets we see now compared to several years ago.

I think most top CB taken in the draft will start just as the Jets Revis and most other top CB who get drafted. I also think you don't have guys playing backup getting paid starters money. Again I'm not saying this as a slam on Newman I like him I just don't see having Dallas spending that amont of cash at 1 position without it having a major impact on resolving other position.

I'm not a Newman fan but the team does need depth at the position so even if the Cowboys take a corner with their top pick I think they'll hang onto Newman one more year.

You have to keep yourself covered in the event of injuries or if the rookie corner you drafted isn't quite ready to take over.

There's some who thought we'd dump Roy after drafting Dez but it paid off keeping him.

I'm not sure how good the Cowboys feel about Scandrick and with Jenkins coming off a terrible 2010 season the team may feel it's best to hang onto Newman.

With the problems the Cowboys have had in coverage they need all the corners they can hang onto especially a veteran like Newman.

There is a learning curve for rookies and having a veteran corner to lean on until the young player is ready can make for a smoother transition.

Ok whatever I'm not going to go around in circles with you, you have a view and it is your view and I don't share it. I put this much emphasis on cash because like every team out there we have to be below the cap and right now Dallas has one of the highest salary in the league and like every team you sometimes have to part with guys who have been major contributors on the team NE has been doing it for years and because of that they are able to spread the cash around to the different position to keep themselves competitive.

Amukamara, IMO, has just OK ball skills. If he's a Strong Safety, that might work but I don't know if he's got the ball skills to be a Free Safety, IDK.

Besides, it's the same issue we've discussed over and over again with Peterson. Why take a guy at 9 if your only going to change his position to one he's never played before?

I think he's a press corner in the NFL. JMO

I wonder how his ball skills compare to Tramon Williams' in college.

...and I agree with that.

Except our CB situation doesn't fit that mold IMO. We have one very good (albeit aging and oft-injured) #1 CB, a #2 that is coming off of one of the worst sophomore slumps I've ver witnessed, and little if anything behind that. Their contracts are very agreeable in terms of the salary cap for now...and adding a CB in the draft, even if he starts and replaces Newman at the #1 spot, doesn't make us much better.

This isn't like letting Spears walk, where we have a certain amount of depth behind him and a wealth of talent to choose from in this draft. Those are the types of moves the Patriots make....they won't let their best players go due to contract issues UNLESS they have a contingency to replace them. We don't because our entire secondary has questions, from Newman's injuries, Jenkin's terrible play last year, no CB depth, the inconsistent play from Sensi, the borderline criminal play by Ball, and the number of question marks down the depth chart. We're really hurting in the secondary....getting rid of Newman just doesn't make sense if you want to win IMO....regardless of his cap hit.

..but, like you said, your entitled to your opinion.

And I think that Rob Ryan's scheme needs press corners...
