Six out of eight players the Cowboys drafted over the weekend play on the offensive side of the ball. This has raised some eyebrows, particularly considering that many observers thought that the the major needs on the team outside of the O-line were on the defensive side of the ball.

In yesterday's press conference the Cowboys Brass were grilled accordingly. Stephen Jones and Jason Garrett took turns answering those questions. Along the way, they stressed how following their board led them to the picks they made, how the draft is just one part of the talent acquisition process and that free agency as well as re-signing their own free agents, particularly on defense will be an important building block for the team once the league establishes a set of rules under which to operate.

After the break, a partial transcript of yesterday's press conference in which Jones and Garrett discusses further talent acquisition steps.

Q: Were there not any defensive players that were attractive to you guys, other than [linebacker and] corner?...

With undrafted Tony Romo being our starting quarterback, the importance of undrafted free agents is not lost on Cowboys fans. However, some numbers came out on the NFL Channel with regard to the way the current top 100 players (as voted on by the players themselves) in the NFL were acquired.

57 were 1st round picks
07 were 3rd round picks
07 were 4th round picks
04 were 5th round picks
01 was a 6th round pick
02 were 7th round picks
11 were 2nd round picks
11 were undrafted free agents

So, when it comes to acquiring the very best players in the league, the numbers say that NFL teams have the same opportunity to acquire a great player after the draft is over as they had in the 2nd round of the draft.

That is really pretty startling news.

Now, if one did a further inquiry as to how many of those top players were additionally parts of at least a playoff level team, one would see the glue of team-adding players as well to a 'good' team.

I don't think it's that startling. Every year a team is going to have exactly 1 2nd rounder on average and roughly 8 free agents. I think it might even be surprising in the other direction -- more than 2/3 of the top 100 players were taken in the 1st or 2nd round and 3/4 by the end of the 3rd. That seems pretty good to me.

This is relevant with this Dallas draft as well. That all three of the first three picks additionally carried first round association is strong. That they were used for depth, in two cases, only strengthens the team as well. That they will require development as well as opportunity to make major contributions is merely a function and entrapmet of beig a 'rook' on a team with few actual holes for starting positions.

Except for safety, upgrades are earned from this point forward.

that would be a little skewed math.....

would you say guys like D. Ware, Witten are good players, well they only won one playoff game, does that mean every other team out there wouldnt want them?

Just saying have to look more individual as far as draft goes...

No argument with what you presented...only was implying that the end result that provides strong team play is what is desired. It takes good as well as great players to forge a quality team. Team being the goal, not a roster with nothing but All Pro players.

Interesting. The Cowboys followed their board and came away with more O players than D players. The consensus for this draft was that it was not only top heavy but deep, in D talent.

In a couple of years, we will see if Jerry and co. was right or not.

Interesting fact, of all the Pro Bowlers named last year, 23 were undrafted players.
