A QB for the Cowboys in May? Well, why not!
The Cowboys made lots of headlines during the NFL Combine by meeting with a much-ballyhooed QB from Texas A&M.
When they met with two QBs who could be realistic Cowboys targets in May, there were almost no headlines. According to Todd Archer from ESPNDallas, the Cowboys met with Eastern Illinois’ Jimmy Garoppolo and San Jose State’s David Fales during the NFL Combine. Garoppolo has been championed on these pages repeatedly by our own KD Drummond; Fales hasn't been championed by anybody so far, but he did pass for more than 4,000 yards in each of the last two years and led the FBS in completion percentage (72.5) in 2012.
Both QBs are interesting prospects, in part because of the QB situation in Dallas: Kyle Orton has recently been linked to rumors that he is contemplating retirement, and the Cowboys could clear $2.3 million in cap space by releasing him after the 2014 season. Tony Romo still has a couple of years left on his contract, but he is no spring chicken and has repeatedly battled injuries over the last few years.
Could this be a good time to bring in a young guy with upside to back up Orton this year and perhaps back up Romo next year? And in the unlikely event that such a backup could be groomed to eventually take over the starting job in Dallas, I guarantee that nobody will be mad about the pick.

Some people, including former Colts GM Bill Polian, see Garoppolo as a first-round prospect, but the consensus sees has him as a second or third round prospect. Fales looks to be graded a little lower and is projected to go somewhere in the fourth or fifth round.
Last year saw some previously highly touted QB prospects like Matt Barkley and Landry Jones drop all the way to the fourth round. If the QBs start dropping again in this year's draft, should the Cowboys catch one of them?
