The NFL lowered the boom on defensive end Randy Gregory.

The Dallas Cowboys had hoped that somehow Randy Gregory wouldn’t be suspended until after the NFL playoffs were over. The NFL ended that dream today when they suspended Gregory for at least one year. The suspension begins now, ruling him out of the upcoming playoffs and wiping out his regular season in 2017.

The Cowboys had seen Gregory make an impact in the past couple of games, especially in the Eagles game when he displayed his speed in the run game and managed to pick up his first NFL sack. Based on those two games, the Cowboys had hopes that he could contribute to their pass rush in the playoffs. Instead, they will have to go with the guys that got them this far.

With Gregory’s 2017 wiped out, he would only have one more year on his rookie contract after that, the 2018 season. The question for the Cowboys now becomes do they want to carry Gregory through next season in hopes that he can finally produce for the organization in 2018. And that is only if he doesn’t have another violation along the way.

Jerry Jones has indicated in the past that he wouldn't give up on Gregory, but in light of this new suspension that Cowboys might need to make some hard choices.
