Reports are circulating that the Cowboys have talked to Josh McCown about coming to Dallas.

A familiar name is surfacing as a possible backup quarterback for the Cowboys, the same guy who was discussed last season. The Cowboys reached out to the Cleveland Browns about Josh McCown in 2016 when they we playing quarterback shuffle, first after an injury to Kellen Moore, then later when Tony Romo went down. The Browns were asking too much, reportedly either a second-round pick or Ron Leary, so the Cowboys balked and ended up playing some kid named Dak Prescott. That turned out okay.

Dallas eventually singed Mark Sanchez to be Prescott’s backup while they waited for Romo to heal. After the disastrous performance by Sanchez in the final game of the season against Philadelphia, it’s unlikely he will be back. Kellen Moore is also a free agent, leaving the Cowboys with a big gaping hole behind Prescott. They might be looking at McCown to fill it.

There's mutual interest between #Cowboys and backup QB Josh McCown. But Tony Romo decision must come first. Could be factor in TR timing

Even though Jerry Jones claims not to have made a decision on Tony Romo’s future, he’s not fooling anyone. The Cowboys will almost certainly trade or release Romo this offseason, it’s 99.9% certain that Romo will not serve as Prescott’s backup this year. Kellen Moore is a Scott Linehan favorite, but Dallas may be looking for a little more in case they need a backup quarterback at any point in the 2017 season. McCown certainly has plenty of experience starting games in the NFL. He will be 38 years old when the season starts, but, as Todd Archer explains, the Cowboys have done this before.

If McCown is the Cowboys’ top target to be Prescott’s backup, it would fall in line with what the Cowboys did early in Romo’s tenure as their starter.

In 2007, his first full season as the starter, the Cowboys signed Brad Johnson, who was 39 at the time, but had plenty of starting experience and won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay. In 2010, the Cowboys traded for Jon Kitna, who was 38 at the time, but had plenty of starting experience.

So BTB, is Josh McCown a good choice to be the Cowboys backup QB in 2017?
