If true, this could drop him out of the first round.
For months now, the Cowboys have been associated with Timmy Jernigan in many mock drafts. If the Cowboys were determined to stay with a defensive tackle in the first round, and Aaron Donald wasn't available, many thought Timmy Jernigan would be the guy. Nobody really knows how much interest the Cowboys have in the Florida State product, but they did invite him for an official pre-draft visit.
Jay Glazer is reporting that Jernigan failed a drug test at the combine. Those reports were sent out to teams last week, so Jernigan's draft stock might have taken a hit in the Cowboys' eyes. It's one thing to fail a drug test, it's another to fail one at the combine when you know you're going to be tested.
Also failing tests were LSU QB Zach Mettnberger (diluted sample) and LSU defensive tackle Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a mid-round prospect who might have been on Dallas' radar for defensive line depth. Mettenberger's agents offered this rationale for a diluted sample which counts as a failed test.
Mettenberger'€™s agents Joe Linta and Seth Katz told FOX Sports that the diluted sample was caused by extra water his client was drinking on the advice of his doctor. Linta said Mettenberger had begun to suffer from cramping while rehabilitating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Additional players failing the drug test according to Glazer include Miami tackle Seantrel Henderson, and Florida State linebackers Telvin Smith and Christian Jones.
Jernigan has been seen as a mid-first-round player at the top end, others have him as an early-second-round player. We'll have to see what Jernigan or his agent have to say about the report before trying to get a handle on how it might affect his draft status.
