In the week of the draft we asked our readers to put together a list of 30 players they thought the Cowboys would draft. Today we look at how accurate those predictions were.
90 Blogging The Boys readers participated in our Dallas Cowboys 2015 Draft Predictions challenge, and in the week of the 2015 NFL Draft, each submitted a list of 30 names of draft prospects they thought would end up with the Cowboys, either as draft picks or priority free agents.
If you had simply submitted the names on our final pre-draft visit tracker, you'd have gotten seven players right. Byron Jones, Randy Gregory, Chaz Green, Damien Wilson, Ryan Russell, Mark Nzeocha, and UDFA George Farmer were all brought in by the Cowboys for official pre-draft visits, and Laurence Gibson had a private workout with the Cowboys.
Granted, there were some late-breaking names on the list like Randy Gregory and Ryan Russell when the first readers began submitting their 30 names. But regardless, not one of our readers settled for the visit tracker.
Still, one reader did get the names of seven rookies right: Chad Loveland was the only participant to have all four top picks (Jones, Gregory, Green, Wilson) on his list, correctly named Laurence Gibson and UDFA George Farmer, and was one of only two people to submit Lucky Whitehead for the challenge.
Chad made this challenge look easy, but it wasn't. The 90 participants hit on an average of just 2.5 picks, despite submitting 30 names for consideration.
72 participants had Byron Jones on their lists, a surprisingly high 68 had Chaz Green on their lists, but it dropped off quickly after that: Laurence Gibson was picked 25 times, Mark Nzeocha and George Farmer were picked 19 times each. Randy Gregory showed up just eight times, La'el Collins was nowhere to be found.
Figuring out the Cowboys' draft plans and draft strategy in hindsight is not hard, and there are legions of Captain Obvious's trolling the airwaves and interwebs doing just that. But if you went through this exercise, you'll understand that predicting the draft is much tougher than you would expect. Post-draft jibber-jabber is easy, but putting your predictions down on paper is really tough.
So hats off to all those brave enough to put virtual ink to virtual paper and submit their list of 30 names for the record. You'll find the full results of all participants below; thank you to all who participated.
