Over at Pro Football Focus, they're looking at 10 potential free agent bargains, and they label Dallas as a good fit for one of them.
The Cowboys search for defensive linemen is an on-going process. I detailed some defensive end prospects earlier, and OCC followed up with a look at potential defensive tackles. One player that the Cowboys supposedly had interest in very early on still hasn't signed with anybody. That's defensive end Robert Ayers from the Broncos. PFF has him rated as a potential bargain because he graded out well in 2013, but hasn't received a contract yet and interest seems to be low.
Robert Ayers, DE2013 Grade: +8.1Summary: Ayers is an interesting one, in that his 2013 production and the fact that he’s still under 30 should result in him being a hotter commodity than he appears to be. However the problem for Ayers is that, until midway through the 2012 season, he had been largely inconsistent for the Denver Broncos. Better against the run than he is as a pass rusher, Ayers has come on considerably as a player recently, but is likely a candidate for a one year "prove it" deal to show that he can maintain that form.
Good Fit: Dallas
Of course, the fact that DeMarcus Ware left Dallas for Denver affects Ayers chances of re-signing in Denver.
A little more on Ayers as a player.
After two disappointing season as a linebacker in the Broncos' 3-4 defense - Ayers struggled in coverage - he was moved to defensive end in the team's new 4-3 scheme two seasons ago. This season, the 6-3, 274-pounder was the Broncos' situational pass rusher.
"We like him on the open side (opposite the tight end)," Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio said. "He had bounced from outside linebacker to a defensive tackle position and we didn't feel like that was best for him. We feel like the role he's in now is one in which he can really excel."
