The Cowboys will enter the season with their new franchise QB, but who else will be on the roster?
In the coming days and weeks, we will present a ten part series of a position by position roster breakdown analyzing the starters and assessing the depth chart for the Dallas Cowboys. While some positions are clearly set (the offensive line), other positions remain very unclear (the secondary). We will start with the quarterbacks.
Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott enters the 2017 campaign as the clear starter after last year’s remarkable performance. His leadership and play-making were the catalyst during the thirteen win season. What a difference a year makes! Just twelve months ago, he was preparing for the NFL Draft and now he is preparing to begin his second year as the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, arguably the most sought-after position in all of sports.
Tony Romo
Tony Romo lead the Cowboys for a number of seasons and was at the center of many of their greatest successes, but also some of their epic failures. A series of untimely injuries and a precocious rookie season from Dak Prescott essentially ends Romo’s future with the Dallas Cowboys. The only major question moving forward is what will Dallas get in return, and where will Romo end up. What is clear is that Dak will miss Romo’s experience and leadership on the sidelines.
Mark Sanchez
Mark Sanchez was signed by the Dallas Cowboys last September (a week before the season started) to backup then-rookie Dak Prescott. Fortunately, he was never needed last season. While he started his NFL career in grand fashion with back-to-back AFC Championship games (both losses), his career has essentially fizzled since then. His brief stint as the lead man for the Cowboys came in Week 17 against Philadelphia where he looked absolutely horrific as he threw two interceptions and was sacked three times. With a $2 million price tag last season while playing on a one-year contract, chances are minimal that the Cowboys re-sign him.
Kellen Moore
On August 2, 2016, Kellen Moore suffered a broken leg in practice which set in motion the events that led to Dak Prescott getting the starting role for the Dallas Cowboys. While the rest is history, Kellen Moore could remain with the Cowboys for future seasons. His relationship with Scott Linehan has been well documented since their days together in Detroit. The majority of his playing time came in at the end of the 2015 campaign where he showed potential and solidified himself as a reliable backup quarterback in the NFL.
Summary Prediction
Dak Prescott: Starter - Prescott has earned the starter’s role, and if everything works out as hoped, he will be the starter for the next decade or more.
Kellen Moore: Second String - As a favorite of Scott Linehan, there is a good possibility the Cowboys will re-sign him to backup Prescott. He knows the Cowboys system, has the trust of the coaches and should come relatively cheap.
Mid to late round rookie: Third String - The Cowboys will dip back into the draft well in the later rounds for a developmental quarterback who could end up on the practice squad.
Tony Romo: Trade - This is the story we are all waiting to see where it goes. The Cowboys would like to get a decent pick back for Romo’s services, but we’ll have to wait and see what the market bears.
Mark Sanchez: No Interest - Time to move on.
