The oft-injured Dallas middle linebacker returns to the team after missing the end of the season due to hamstring and neck ligament injuries that ended his 2013 season..
By now we know that Sean Lee suffers more than his share of injury issues, primarily due to the style of play that he brings to the game. Lee plays football by going all out on every snap, and while this endears him to the fans, it also exposes him to the harsh realities of a violent sport. For the Cowboys, this means that Sean has yet to play a full 16-game season. He is currently looking at ways that he can maintain his playing style while still making it to the end without missing time.
"I think I've had a combination of injuries, like the hamstring would be an injury-prone type of injury. I think I've also had some bad luck where I got rolled up in a pile with my toe and I've gotten hit by my own guy in a pile. I need to find a way to stay healthy, whether it's finding a way to be stronger and not having the hamstring deal or it's hopefully having a little bit better luck. I need a combination of both going forward." - Sean Lee
Last season the Dallas Cowboys middle linebacker, who had earned the honor of being named as one of the defensive captains for his efforts, was limited to 11 games. Still in that time he recorded 99 tackles and four interceptions, including a pick-6. Lee knows that his presence on the field, not just as a player but also as a leader, is vital to the success of the unit. With the departure of DeMarcus Ware, his importance to Rod Marinelli's defense has become even more vital. Time and time again he has stated publicly that he has to find a way to stay health and make it through a complete season.
"I need to find a way to stay healthy, whether it's finding a way to be stronger and not having the hamstring deal or it's hopefully having a little bit better luck. I need a combination of both going forward."
For now, Lee has returned to Valley Ranch and he is taking part in individual works, and he is expected to be a full participant when off-season activities begin at the end of next month. Going forward the Cowboys cannot afford to be without the services of the undisputed leader of the defense. He will be looking to set aside the bad luck like getting hit while in the pile that has plagued him so far, and will take action to prevent the soft tissue injuries that have limited his availability, specifically with his hamstrings. A lion's share of the defensive success that the Cowboys experience will depend on his ability to do just that.
While we have previously looked at the things Sean is trying to reduce some of the injuries, like using a hyperbaric chamber to promote faster healing of his body, perhaps Lee might want to think about four leaf clovers and rabbit's feet. He is an amazing talent, but his career has certainly been star-crossed up to this point. Nobody wants to be out there on the field more than Lee, you can see it in his face when he is sidelined on game day. He just needs to find a way to make it happen, and it needs to happen soon.
