The Cowboys will not renew a contract with the defensive coach.
According to an ESPN report, multiple sources have informed them that the Dallas Cowboys will not be renewing a contract with Monte Kiffin. After an offseason where the Cowboys kept head coach Jason Garrett, play-caller Scott Linehan and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, along with many other assistants, it looks like Kiffin will join Bill Callhan as the only coaches the Cowboys didn't keep.
Kiffin was brought in two years ago to change the Cowboys defense to a 4-3, and to specifically make it a Tampa 2 scheme. That first year under Kiffin was a disaster for the defense as they put up historically bad stats. Kiffin's scheme seemed dated and he was unable to come up with effective modifications to improve it. After the season the Cowboys had to make a change and elevated defensive line coach Rod Marinelli to the coordinator position and gave Kiffin a title of assistant head coach/defense, but in reality he was bumped out of the way and made a "consultant". Now, he won't even be that according to the sources.
The article at ESPN says Kiffin would like to keep coaching, but it's unlikely he will be doing it at a high-level anymore. The tenure in Dallas was probably his last chance at a defensive coordinator spot in the NFL. He'll probably have to accept a lesser role somewhere if offered, or move down to the college ranks.
