Time for some mock draft fun. Submit your mock draft now and have it voted on by your fellow BTB members. Think you're up to the challenge?
Do you have a little time to spare for some mock draft fun on a lazy Saturday afternoon? If so, you're in luck, because BTB has got a challenge for you: Create a Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft.
This is the second time this year we're doing this exercise, after doing our first one in January. So go ahead, create your mock draft for the Dallas Cowboys and submit it for a peer review by your fellow Blogging The Boys members. The BTB community will hand out recommendations for those mocks they like the most, and the winners will be put to a final vote some time over the next two weeks.
But wait. There are rules. You can't just pick whatever players you like.
The Rules
- We will use the CBSSports Big Board from March 22, 2016 as the basis for all mock drafts. We will assume that all draft-eligible players will be available at exactly the spot CBS has them in. You don't like where CBS has a player ranked? Go complain to someone who cares.
- Dallas owns the no. 4, 34, 67, 101, 135, 189, 212, 216, and 217 picks. You pick at your exact spot or anywhere below that.
- You are allowed only one trade-down. The value you give up in the trade-up must be equal to or greater than the value you receive, e.g. your 4th (1,800 pts) pick could get you Baltimore's 6th, 104th, and 130th picks (1,728 pts). You may however trade up as often as you want. Again though, the value you give up in the trade up must be equal to or greater than the value you receive.
- You cannot trade the comp picks! Picks 135, 212, 216, and 217 cannot be used in any kind of trade.
- Mocks that do not meet the criteria outlined above will be deleted. Nobody wants to waste their time on mocks that don't fit the bill.
- You can find the full 2016 NFL draft order here in case you're looking for a team to trade with. Use this handy draft pick value calculator and the draft value chart immediately below it, it will make this exercise a lot easier.
Post your mock in the comments section below. As you read through the mocks other BTB members have posted, look for mocks that you like and recommend them (just press rec at the bottom of the comment box). And don't be stingy with your rec's. It's more fun for everybody involved if we have a high rec' count.
The best mocks will be featured on the front page in some form over the next two weeks or so, so put some thought into your mock. And give us a rationale for your picks - mocks that have some extra content beyond a simple list of nine player names usually get more rec's, are more fun to read, and will be treated preferentially as I pick the best mocks for the front page post.
To get this challenge started, I'll submit the following mock, which has one trade-down and one trade-up, giving me nine picks in total.
TRADE DOWN: 4th (1,800 pts) for Baltimore's 6+104+130 (1,800 pts for 1,722.8 pts)
Rd 1. (6) DeForest Buckner, DT/DE, Oregon. Buckner has the bulk and strength to play both inside at defensive tackle and outside at defensive end, and the Cowboys get what many are now calling the best defensive lineman in the draft.
TRADE UP: 34+104+130 for Arizona's 29+128 (688 for 684 points)
Rd 1. (29) Noah Spence, RDE, Eastern Kentucky. The Cowboys can't believe their luck when they see both Spence and Emmanuel Ogbah drop to the bottom of the first, so they decide to double-dip on defensive linemen. They use the two picks they just acquired to move back into the first round and acquire the best pure pass rusher in the draft.
Rd 3. (67) Braxton Miller, WR, Ohio State. A former quarterback, Miller is still very raw as a wideout, but has some uncanny speed and athleticism that should help the team that drafts him win games.
Rd 4. (101) C.J. Prosise, RB, Notre Dame. The Cowboys get themselves a great athlete with a great track record of production.
Rd. 4 (128) Sean Davis, FS, Maryland. Rob Rang explains the prospect:
Another cornerback/safety hybrid, Davis boasts the size, length and muscular build that NFL scouts covet in the secondary. He is an aggressive run defender with the tackling skills and power to dislodge the football, ranking second in the FBS last season with five forced fumbles.
Rd 4. (135) Max Tuerk, OG/OC, USC. The Cowboys need a swing OC/OG, and Tuerk is just their guy. He played in a pro-stle offense, is a great fit for a zone scheme, and can play any interior spot.
Rd 7. (212) Keanu Neal, FS, Florida. Neal has been screaming up draft boards and is way underrated here. The Cowboys don't mind double-dipping at this position either, as long as they get it right without paying Eric Weddle-level money.
Rd 7. (216) Brandon Allen, QB, Arkansas. The Cowboys watched him closely at the Senior Bowl and were impressed by what they saw: arguably the best SEC QB from 2015, who led the conference in passer rating (166.48) and yards per attempt (9.3). Allen completed 65.9% of his passes and tossed 30 touchdowns against just eight interceptions - good enough to draft him as a developmental prospect in Dallas.
Rd 7. (217) Tre Madden, RB, USC. The Cowboys throw numbers at the running back position and with good reason. Use 4th and 7th round picks on RBs, add McFadden, Miller & Dunbar and you've got real and serious options for your ground game.
