With the free agency loss of Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox, the Cowboys’ safeties are not tackling at the rate they did last year.

With the trade deadline approaching at the end of the month, SB Nation asked us to suggest a trade we’d like to see Dallas execute before the deadline. My answer was that the Cowboys should go after safety Tyvon Branch from the Cardinals to replace the low-rated Jeff Heath. This got me thinking, so I decided to do a bit of a dive into the stats this season for the Cowboys’ safeties, and specifically their tackling stats.

One of the main differences between this year and last is the Cowboys run-stopping ability has plummeted. This is not solely due to the team not being ahead and forcing opponents to pass. It’s largely due to the fact the Cowboys haven’t tackled well.

Tackles made by the secondary is a dubious stat. Sometimes a corner or safety is making a lot of tackles because teams' are throwing on them successfully.

If a receiver makes a 15-yard catch on a db and the db immediately makes a tackle... Is that stat favorable or unfavorable?

You want your front 7 making most of the tackles...since that's usually an indication teams aren't gaining as many yards.

I'm open to upgrading Heath and the notion that our safeties might not be providing as much in run support. But this article is pretty weak as it's based on flawed numbers. Missed tackles would be a useful stat. The author never gives us that.

Apparently the columnist was correct about Barry Church and many of us were wrong...

You can toot your own horn, but as much as I appreciated Church's ability to lay the wood, he was a liability in overage. I believe the Cowboys want their safeties to be almost interchangeable, as far as being to tackle and to cover. Some folks on here might even tell you we need two starting safeties. although I personally like Byron Jones.

Yes he was a liability in coverage, that’s why I said I really viewed him as a #2. We still need a true #1.....
