The Cowboys first compensatory pick is in.
The Dallas Cowboys finally drafted a quarterback. With their second of two picks in the fourth round they took Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott. It has been a hot topic all offseason for Dallas, whether they were going to get Tony Romo's successor. There was a thought they might grab one of the top quarterbacks with their number four pick, but once the Rams and the Titans traded up to get their franchise QBs, the question became when would Dallas pounce. Turns out the fourth round was the answer.
Prescott was once thought of as a running quarterback who could throw a little. That is no longer the case as his final years in college showed he's a well-rounded talent. He certainly has the physical traits to make life difficult for NFL defenders, and he also has a big arm. He would benefit from sitting in a system for a few years while refining his technique and footwork, something he can do in Dallas.
Dallas has made their move at quarterback, a move many people anticipated. Dallas has now picked twice for offense, and three times for defense. While they are in a "win-now" mode, they are also looking at the future.
Prescott Profiles:
CBS Sports:
IN OUR VIEW: Evaluators knew he was a bruising runner, using his size, quickness and toughness to run over defenders, but Prescott has shown a much improved feel in the passing game, displaying anticipation, decisiveness and above average awareness to recognize things quickly and react accordingly. He deserves credit for the positive steps he has taken, but a lot of evaluators aren't sold quite yet as Prescott tends to predetermine his throws and has the bad habit of locking onto his targets, missing open reads downfield.
NFL.com:
BOTTOM LINE
Hard to find an NFL comp for Prescott because he's built like Donovan McNabb, but lacks McNabb's ability and polish. Prescott has NFL size, mobility and enough arm, but the tape shows a player who must improve his mechanics, poise and quickness through his progressions if he is to become a full-time starter in the NFL. There are absolutely draftable traits and upside, but he will need extended work to smooth out his flaws. Until then, a team would be wise to utilize him on short-yardage packages.
