New York Giants (0-6)
New York Giants 21
Chicago Bears 27
- Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning continues to throw interceptions while his charmed football life is crumbling around him. Despite his success in New York, according to one reporter the younger Manning brother now looks like "he was reduced to a lost and desperate soul, a guy with absolutely no clue how to win a football game." After managing to snatch defeat from the jaws of potential victory against Chicago by throwing his 13th, 14th and 15th inceptions of the season, Eli faced the media.
"I feel like I'm not doing my part to give this team some wins, and some chances, and so that's the frustrating part. I feel like our guys our fighting hard, and guys are doing their parts, and I need to start doing mine." - Eli Manning
- After the week six contest, Terrell Thomas became the latest Giant to question the commitment of his teammates in an open forum. Thomas is angry with the performance that he and his fellow players have delivered over the first six weeks of the season. He also finds it hard to believe that everyone else does not feel the same emotion; some players are laughing and joking around in the locker room following defeats.
"I think some don’t care." - Terrell Thomas
- Head coach Tom Coughlin knows exactly what is wrong with the Giants this season. As he stated in his Friday morning presser, after the loss in Chicago, for New York it comes down to a couple key issues. On defense the team is not getting pressure on the quarterback as they have in years past and they are not creating turnovers. On the other side of the ball, Eli and the offense are generating plenty of turnovers for their opponents.
- The latest distraction flying around the team is the rumor that wide receiver Hakeem Nicks may soon be traded. In his contract year, and expected to take his talents elsewhere for 2014, Nicks could be that one piece that a contender needs to solidify their chances in the playoffs. According to Jason La Canfora, several teams believe that the Giants could receive a third round selection in return for Nicks, even as a second half of the season "rental."
Among the teams holding internal discussions about him, according to club sources, were the 49ers and Falcons (who lost Julio Jones for the season but are not conceding the season … at least certainly not yet). New England and Baltimore are also contending teams in need of an upgrade at receiver, and the market for Nicks would be robust, sources believe, if the Giants express a willingness to listen to offers.
- Next on the slate for the Giants will be a shot to get in the victory column as the host the Minnesota Vikings for the Monday night game.
Washington Commanders 16
Dallas Cowboys 31
- The Commanders offense saw another positive sign as Robert Griffin III continues to improve from his off season knee surgery, while at the same time they seemed to regress from their performance against the Oakland Raiders.
They couldn’t stop a Dallas pass rush despite the Cowboys losing end DeMarcus Ware. They couldn’t convert in the red zone. They turned the ball over twice, once inside their own 5-yard line. One step forward; two back. Griffin looked more spry; it didn’t matter.
- Washington is a team that manages to defeat themselves. Even with a defense that rose to the occasion against the Dallas Cowboys by turning in their best statistical performance of the last two years, they still managed to be outscored nearly 2:1 thanks to failures on special teams and offense. As CBS DC stated, the Commanders are like a Picasso painting from his Cubist period "valuable, but the elements are out of whack". Cornerback Josh Wilson and fullback Darrel Young offered similar assessments to the media after the game.
"Right now we need to get out of our own way. We’re stopping ourselves, we’re beating ourselves, and we have to figure out how to stop doing that." - Josh Wilson
"We found the enemy tonight. It was us." - Darrel Young
- Special teams for the Commanders have been anything but special. Two weeks after suffering a blocked punt for a touchdown at the hands of the Oakland Raiders, the Skins found themselves gashed for over 200 yards in lick returns by the Cowboys. They also suffered a missed field goal by kicker Kai Forbath and a penalty on the special teams coach who made contact with an official during a punt return by Dwayne Harris.
"Worst special teams performance I’ve been a part of. I can’t put my finger on it. They were better on us on every phase of special teams. . . . We have to do better. - Niles Paul
- Next Sunday the Commanders face another formidable task as the Chicago Bears pay a visit to FedEx field.
Philadelphia Eagles 31
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20
- Once again, there are questions concerning who will be the starting quarterback in Chip Kelly's offense. After the victory over the Giants, in which stater Michael Vick was injured, Kelly was adamant that, if healthy, Vick was the starter. Following the game against the Bucs, he was much less committal. Nick Foles went 22 for 31 and 296 yards in the start on Sunday and accounted for three passing touchdowns as well as rushing for another. His quarterback rating was 133.3 against the Buccaneers. Some feel that Foles earned a second start with his performance
Foles not only got the job done, he left little to criticize. He got rid of the ball, threw it accurately, avoided or withstood pressure when necessary, and ran the offense at pretty close to the pace the coach desires. - Bob Ford, Philadelphia Enquirer
- Shady McCoy got back on track against Tampa Bay. After a couple down performances against Denver and New York, he carried the ball 25 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns against the hapless Bucs. The return to form was sparked by an upsurge in the play of his offensive linemen.
“We knew they were going to try and take the run away. They did a lot of stunts. They’re a very fast and aggressive defense. But I think the linemen up front just made the right calls, got into their blocks, and Coach Kelly, give a lot of credit to him, he made a lot of good calls. It worked out.” - LeSean McCoy
- Although the Tampa Bay offense under rookie quarterback Mike Glennon is not the most potent attack in the NFL, during the first half they scored 17 points and gained 178 yards against a porous Eagles defense. Coming out at halftime, a combination of the Philly defense stiffening and and the Buccaneers returning to form allowed Bill Davis' defense to slow down Glennons's attack.
"We're all learning together -- the players are learning about me and I'm still learning about them -- and it takes some time. I loved the effort and I loved the way we finished the game. We got out of here with a win, and that's what matters." - Bill Davis, Eagles defensive coordinator
- Riley Cooper, best known for some ill-advised racial comments that threatened to disrupt the locker room, came up big for the Eagles on Sunday. He had four catches for 120 yards and a critical score against Tampa Bay.
- Next on the agenda for the Eagles with be a home date with the Dallas Cowboys. Both teams enter the game with identical 3-3 records and are undefeated in both divisional and conference games.
