Will they or won't they? That's the question everyone is pondering - will the Cowboys draft a quaterback of the future at pick number four in the 2016 NFL draft, or will they pass and grab another position? There are solid arguments on both sides of the issue. Today, we take a look at ESPN mock drafter Todd McShay to see what he decides in version 2.0 of his 2016 mock drafts.
After giving Joey Bosa to the Tennessee Titans, Jared Goff to the Cleveland Browns and Laremy Tunsil to the San Diego Chargers, the Cowboys are on the clock and take:
Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State Bison
Now that I'm deep into Wentz's tape, I feel very comfortable saying he's a legit first-round talent. He has the height, sturdy frame, natural accuracy, pocket mobility and on-field leadership you look for in a QB. He was 20-3 as a starter at NDSU and won two FCS national titles. You could certainly make a case for the Cowboys taking the best available D-line prospect, such as Oregon's DeForest Buckner. But if Dallas is sold on Wentz (or Goff, if he's available), this could prove to be a very wise long-term investment at the game's most important position.
There are couple of things to digest here. The first is - do the Cowboys actually take a quarterback at this spot. We still have a lot of time before the draft and the Cowboys could go the free agency route for a QB. Someone like Robert Griffin, III, or maybe they make a run at Drew Stanton? Even if they did do that, they could still draft a quarterback. Whoever they draft they may feel he's not up to being the backup in the first year and would rather have someone experienced to backup Tony Romo.
There is also the question of how do the Cowboys feel about Carson Wentz? They got a lot of time to look at him at the Senior Bowl, is their evaluation that he's worthy of going that high in the draft? Are they more enamored with Jared Goff?
Finally, are the QBs even their main targets. Are the Cowboys thinking of someone more like DeForest Buckner or Jalen Ramsey for some more firepower on their defense? Could they be thinking let's pair Dez Bryant up with Laquon Treadwell and see how defenses deal with that?
So many options for Dallas. So tell us what you think - To Carson, Or Not To Carson, that is the question.
