Todd McShay of ESPN has produced his most recent mock draft, and it's a three-rounder. The set up is this: McShay is not projecting picks based solely on his evaluations, he's picking as the general manager of each team. He's looking at the organization, its needs and its long-term future. So supposedly this would be what Jerry Jones is doing before heading into the upcoming draft.
Based on that, McShay see it going this way for the Cowboys.
Dallas Cowboys
Round 1 (4): Jared Goff, QB, Cal
Round 2 (34): Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson
Round 3 (67): Sterling Shepard, WR, Oklahoma
Analysis: And now it gets interesting. Tony Romo turns 36 on April 21 and he's coming off a season in which he played just four games after suffering two collarbone injuries. It's time for the Cowboys to start planning for their future at QB. Yes, they need a pass-rusher -- which I took care of in Round 2 with Dodd -- but you can't just ignore the game's most important position, especially a season after seeing the true value of having a competent backup in place. It'd be the perfect situation for Goff, too. He'd get time to transition to the pro game after playing in a spread system at Cal, while also getting to learn from Romo and head coach Jason Garrett.
Jared Goff at pick number four. I'm guessing many Cowboys fans wouldn't be thrilled with that pick. But we can't look at it without context. Who went before that? Well, the Titans took Laremy Tunsil at one, the Browns took Carson Wentz at two, and the Chargers took DeForest Buckner at three. That's right, Jalen Ramsey was still on the board. In fact, McShay has Ramsey slide all the way down to seven for San Francisco.
Could you envision a scenario where the Cowboys pass on Ramsey if available?
As for the second round, Kevin Dodd would be a nice piece to add. But, because the Cowboys drafted Goff in the first, they pass on Paxton Lynch in the second. Yes, Lynch slides down to, guess who, San Francisco in the second. At this point, McShay should have just given the Cowboys the 49ers draft. Goff and Dodd versus Ramsey and Lynch? I have no doubts which way I would go.
And the third round? McShay picks Shepard at receiver, but the Cowboys could have picked up Emmanuel Ogbah just a few picks later (or Shilique Calhoun or Carl Nassib). So based on the way this mock plays out, the Cowboys could have gotten Jalen Rmsey, Paxton Lynch and Emmanuel Ogbah (or another DE) instead of what McShay gave the team.
I'd have to give McShay some pretty low marks on this one. You agree, BTB?
