For the first time in a long time, Tony Romo threw some passes on the practice field.

Tony Romo threw some passes today at the Dallas Cowboys practice. That qualifies as the biggest step yet in his efforts to return to the playing field after fracturing a vertebra in preseason. But, Romo was not dressed in football gear, instead throwing in shorts and a shirt, and he only participated in some individual drills at the beginning of practice.

By all reports, Romo looked comfortable throwing, showing good velocity, dropping back and simulating handoffs, and even throwing a couple of times on the run. He threw in rotation behind Dak Prescott and Mark Sanchez.

At today’s press conference, coach Jason Garrett didn’t have too much to say about Romo except that he’s had some good days recently in his rehab and they will continue to monitor his progress. Obviously Romo will not be ready to go this week, and will likely require some time practicing in pads before any decision can be made. But this certainly moves him one step closer to returning to the field.
