There’s plenty of talent still left in free agency for the Cowboys.

As the free agency period tampering period rolls along, there certainly hasn’t been a lot of movement by the Dallas Cowboys. Of course, this was not unexpected as the team have not been major players in the first wave of free agency recently. The team prefers to wait out the initial rush of signings then try to grab quality players on discounted contracts. This year is a little different as the team has some real room under the salary cap as opposed to previous years when they always seemed to be bumping up against the ceiling. This led to some speculation that this year they might actually go after one or two top-tier talents. They haven’t yet, but they still might as the prices start to come down over the next few days.

Obviously everyone has their eye on Earl Thomas, who still remains available after a handful of other safeties have signed big contracts. He is still a possible target. But who else might the Cowboys look at? Here are some highly-ranked players who have yet to sign, and play at positions of need for the Cowboys.

Safety - The Cowboys could go either way, either a free or strong safety as Xavier Woods has position flex to play both spots. Ideally, they would like another safety who also has position flex and allow them to play interchangeably.

Earl Thomas - This is the big prize, but his demands might be too costly for the Cowboys.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix - Has curiously been traded and is now unsigned even though he’s a quality player.

Tre Boston - Two one-year prove-it deals and he’s proved it both times.

Others: Glover Quin, George Iloka, Marcus Gilchrist, Clayton Geathers

Defensive end - We’re going to go ahead and include this position because of the turmoil around DeMarcus Lawrence’s contract and the suspension of Randy Gregory. It’s doubtful Dallas spends big money here, but a vet on a bargain deal is possible.

Ezekiel Ansah - Likely far out of the Cowboys price range, injury issues a concern.

Justin Houston - Cap casualty because of age/production, but could be a situational pass rusher in the right system.

Bruce Irvin - Age is obviously an issue but still put up numbers.

Cameron Wake - Still productive, but at his age it’s all going to come crashing down soon, can he squeeze out another year?

Alex Okafor - One of the younger guys to hit the market.

Others: Dante Fowler, Michael Johnson, Vinny Curry

Wide receiver - The Cowboys lost Cole Beasley, but they picked up the option on Allen Hurns. Tavon Austin is still out there as a possibility and the draft has some quality players. But if they wanted to add with the free agency route, they could get some quality.

Tyrell Williams - Likely going to be out of the Cowboys price range.

Golden Tate - A shifty slot receiver who can do damage after the catch.

Randall Cobb - His production has certainly slid over the last few seasons.

Donte Moncrief - Had a resurgent year in 2018.

Others: Cordarelle Patterson, Dez Bryant, Pierre Garcon

Running back - The likely play is to pick up a rookie in the draft, but what if the Cowboys want to add a true companion for Ezekiel Elliott, creating more of a 1-2 punch?

Tevin Coleman - The Cowboys liked him coming out of college, and he’s been part of a 1-2 punch backfield.

Jay Ajayi - Is definitely effective when healthy.

Mark Ingram - Can provide some power between the tackles.

TJ Yeldon - Might be ideal because of his ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

Others: C.J. Anderson, Adrian Peterson, Spencer Ware

Defensive tackle - The Cowboys could certainly use some help up the middle. With David Irving gone and the possible need for Tyrone Crawford to play outside, beefing up the middle is important.

Ndamukong Suh - Likely far out of the Cowboys price range.

Danny Shelton - Inconsistency problems and already moved teams on a rookie deal.

Corey Liuget - Injury and suspension interrupted a productive season, became a cap casualty.

Timmy Jernigan - Squeezed out in Philly, a young player with potential.

Rodney Gunter - Athletic and versatile, could be a solid rotation piece.

Others: Muhammad Wilkerson, Malcolm Brown, Darius Philon

So BTB, if the Cowboys are going to spend some money, where should it go (besides Earl Thomas)?

I could see George Iloka. We talked to him last year but he signed with another. Also AP, he showed he still had the goods in Washington last year and that rumor has always ben around. I could see it for 1 year. Pretty weak DT group. Moncrief maybe. Lal was his former coach, then again Richard was ET's and he isn't here. In hopes of some second tier signings
