The Cowboys have love players from big schools in big conferences. They especially love players from the SEC. Here are some draft factoids to ponder while you're passing time watching prospects run drills at Indy:

Players Selected by Conference, 2000-2008:
  • SEC -- 14
  • Big 10 -- 11
  • Big East -- 8
  • ACC -- 7
  • Big 12 -- 6
  • Pac 10 -- 4
Schools with the most players drafted --
  • Ohio State - 5
  • LSU -- 4
Just call them The Ohio Stiff University
The Buckeyes have seen 62 players drafted this decade. Some of them have become fine pros -- Anthony Gonzalez, A.J. Hawk, Santonio Holmes, and Nick Mangold.

The Cowboys have yet to find one. They've taken five Buckeyes -- Bobby Carpenter, Derek Ross, Jamar Martin, Michael Wiley and Tyson Walter -- and have been disappointed every time. In fact, Dallas has had little success drafting Big 10 players. They have but two starters from the conference and only Marion Barber can claim to be a clear hit.

Dallas has seen better success selecting SEC players. Jay Ratliff, Marcus Spears, Bradie James and Jason Witten played in the conference.

It's a Regional Thing, You Wouldn't Understand
The Cowboys' affinity for southern players goes beyond the SEC. Almost half of their draftees -- 33 out of 68 -- are from old Confederate states. Factor this into your draft filters.

Worst Drafts of the Decade
2nd Runner Up -- 2004 -- This draft produced two starters -- Julius Jones and Patrick Crayton -- and two backups in Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones. Only Crayton remains, and he'll return to 3rd receiver this year.

Runner Up -- 2006: Only one starter from this bunch, and he starts for Miami. Anthony Fasano was a washout for Dallas. Jason Hatcher has at least entered the d-line rotation, but he's it from this class. Undrafted Miles Austin is the best member of this class.

The Worst -- 2000 & 2001: I'm cheating a bit, but hear me out. The 2000 class had only five players, courtesy of the Joey Galloway fiasco. The '01 class also lacked a first rounder, courtesy of that deal. Dallas selected fourteen players these years and they all sucked out loud. The '00 class was a complete disaster -- Goodrich, Larrimore, Wiley, Edwards and Grant. The Cowboys carpet bombed the secondary, adding three CBs. Only Edwards eventually made the lineup, and Bill Parcells didn't give a second thought to letting him go.

The '01 group teased briefly, but I stress briefly. When your biggest gets are Quincy Carter, Matt Lehr and Willie Blade, you don't brag about it. When you add Galloway's Cowboys' play, you have a full-scale disaster.

Best Drafts of the Decade
2nd Runner up -- 2008: The Cowboys stayed in their slots, save for one small trade up in the late first, and filled two key areas of need. They snagged Felix Jones and Tashard Choice to replenish a backfield that lost Julius Jones to free agency. The team also landed CBs Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick. Martellus Bennett came in the late 2nd to add ballast to this group.

Runner Up -- 2003: The Tuna's first crop had a lot of misses, but the hits were big ones. Terence Newman came in the first, Jason Witten in the 3rd and Bradie James in the 4th. The scouts also recruited a QB named Romo after hours.

The Best -- 2005: The Cowboys assembled a full defensive line, getting Marcus Spears, Chris Canty and Jay Ratliff in this crop. They started the day with All-Everything OLB Demarcus Ware and took nickel LB Kevin Burnett in the 2nd. Add Pro Bowl RB Marion Barber to the list and you have a full course draft meal.

The SEC is loaded with talented, speedy, athletes that would be great here in Dallas. I thing the SEC, without a doubt, is the deepest and toughest conference in college football.

Most of this was due to the Larry Lacewell effect.

A lot of who gets drafted is due to networking by the power brokers. Jerry Jones and Lacewell had deep SEC connections and it showed in who we drafted. We simply thought we knew them better.

It happens often in organizations when they get into ruts. The old George Young Giants had a Big Ten fetish. The Patriots are on a University of Florida kick right now.

What is strange to note is that since Jimmy Johnson left, we have not drafted a single University of Miami player.

Wow, that '05 draft really was awesome! Here's to hoping we have a decent one this year.

Question, if Austin is given the 2nd round tender and Miami decides he's worth it, would be be able to package 2 2nd's and a 3rd to move into the first round? Or is there better value by hanging onto the two 2nd round picks?

Vela is reporting that the Cowboys talked to LSU WR, Demetrius Byrd and Oklahoma OT, Phil Loadholt.

I want Byrd in a Cowboys uniform.

I'm reading Vela.

He thinks Dallas can deal Greg Ellis.

Deal him now... Deal him now... Everybody....:)

Also, Dallas looked at a QB from Ball State and another QB.

LSU... LSU... LSU... lol Let's draft them all. I'm serious.

Herman Johnson
Demetrius Byrd
Quinn Johnson
Curtis Taylor

I've had all these guys in my mocks. I didn't even mention Darry Beckwith at ILB.

I like him, too.

Is he too light? He lists at 289. That guy from UConn will probably be gone. He's just 290, too. What if he can't keep his weight up after he gains some? Justin Tuck and company will truck him.

I know you like Antione Caldwell. What if he's the BPA in round 3? Taking him makes sense on paper, but Andre Gurode is in his prime and has been to three straight Pro Bowls. How does Caldwell ever see the field when he's behind Gurode. In four years, Caldwell is gone. Offensive linemen can play at a high level, well into their 30s. I expect Andre Gurode to do meet that standard. He's the Cowboys best offensive linemen and one of the very best in the NFL.

Before, I thought you couldn't take a backup center in round 3. I've been trying to convince myself, but I can't. On the other hand, this is one of the most talented center years in recent memory. The position is usually weak.

What say you, iroot4?

Jamon weighed in at 304lbs. today, he's already strong, benched 34 times today, so he only needs to get up to 310 IMO, 315 at the most

about Caldwell, I really think Gurode should move to LG, the guy has too many mental lapses to be the C anymore, and even if Gurode stays, Caldwell can back him up and probably could start at LG, he played LG mostly in the Senior Bowl game, and was quite good there, the guy is 6'3", that's a good height for that position, he needs to get a little stronger though, he benched a respectable 23 reps today

if we could pull Jamon and Antoine in the same draft and get the left side of the line set for the future, I would be ecstatic

Hey guys, I'm from Columbia, S.C. and a huge Gamecocks fan. Walk away from Meredith and don't look back. He's not all that!

Thanks, iroot4. I didn't know that about Meredith. Good points about Caldwell's potential at LG. That is a possibilty. The offensive line in the SEC is loaded this year.

You know what. I've been noticing your guy from Auburn, Tyronne Green may shoot up to the third. I thought he would be too light, but I looked at him again, and he's built like a tank from the waste down. He has a powerful punch and can really move well. If the Cowboys don't take a guard in round one, Green could be had in round 3. It isn't like Kosier is a giant.

On the other hand, you will not get a chance to draft a guy like Herman Johnson every year. The guy is a freak. ("The Planet Theory") I just read where the scouts are really wanting to look at him at the combine, more than the other guards. Plus, he has OT potential. Furthermore, I think he can be a dominate force on the interior. I knew Caldwell played guard at the Senior Bowl, but I don't know if he can dominate at that position in the NFL. I know you are not big on Gurode. We just disagree on him.

I bet the Eagles are eyeing "The House". They are right behind us in round 2. I read something about them sliding a guard to tackle and looking for a guard.

You are right. The left side needs to be addressed.

The QB from Ball State is Nate Davis... to throw a damper on everybody's anticipation, NFL Draft Scout compares him to (get ready for it) QUINCY CARTER!!!

<ducking for cover>

Now, if only the other QB they looked at compared to Hutch, we could revive one of the all-time great QB controversies in Cowboys' history, almost on the level of Morton vs. Staubach... :D

Edit-- seems the other QB they talked with is Arizona State's Rudy Carpenter, who currently grades out as a late rounder...
