Improved Secondary Play Should Make the New Stadium Blitz City
In the last three years, I've probably devoted more lines to analyzing, and ripping the Cowboys mediocre safety play than I have on any other subject. How many spring pieces were devoted to safety draft options? How many people were content with the team's offseason moves there, given that it only signed the greatly overlooked Gerald Sensabaugh in free agency, and didn't spend a draft pick on the spot until the 5th round, when Michael Hamlin became a Cowboy?

I spoke to a trusted source today who has seen several of the team's recent workouts. He predicted the secondary would be a team strength this year and mentioned some unexpected names as reasons for optimism, at the safety position and for the secondary as a whole.

The source reinforced head coach Wade Phillips' claims that Sensabaugh can play. What's more, I was told that third-year D-back Alan Ball worked out at corner and safety and impressed at both spots. Courtney Brown also earned some praise, but Ball was singled out for his performances.

This news marks an incredible improvement in the quality and scope of Ball's play. Recall that just one year ago, Ball beat out veteran Evan Oglesby for the final cornerback slot. This caused some fans to howl i disapproval, since Oglesby had been an early star of the Oxnard workouts. Ball, however, showed that position coach Dave Campo's faith was well-placed. He was prepared when he was thrown into the Tampa Bay game and did not embarrass himself in later appearances.

The impressive showings by Sensabaugh, Ball and Brown mean Dallas could finally have depth, after two years where Ken Hamlin was the team's only dependable safety. If these three can carry their play into the summer and fall, Dallas will have four safeties with coverage skills, a welcome improvement from the Roy Williams, Keith Davis and Pat Watkins days.

The improved speed and range should give Wade Phillips the option to press more and to blitz more often. With the Dallas linebacker pass rush in questionable shape after Greg Ellis' departure, Phillips was likely to blitz more heavily anyway. Now, he may do so with greater confidence.

Good write-up. I enjoy Vela's commentary.
I have not been this excited about the back-end of the secondary since Woody and Roy were tearing it up together.

Time will tell, I wait every year for the safety position to stand out, other than K. Hamlin that positon has needed much imporvement.

Its Roys fault.

He dwindled into mediocrity.

He was like Demarcus Ware in the secondary for about 3 years then he was captain average after that.

It was a tough position for us. We gave Roy the big money and he tanked soon after. Maybe it was the horse collar. Maybe something else. I will wait to see on Ball and I am still wondering how good Sensabaugh could be given Jacksonville didn't resign him.

Just because a team doesn't re-sign a player, doesn't make him a garbage player. These things happen. Is Keith Brooking garbage because ATL didn't re-sign him?

I have not paid a lot of attention this offseason, but did we release Pat Watkins?

Exactly. He's far from being a garbage player, and had a really good season last year. He only did poorly in free agency demand because of his legal troubles. The Saints chased after him too it should be remembered.

Watkins is still around, but probably not by the time the season starts.
:starspin I feel the same way about Watkins, if the other dbs do any kind of job at their respective positions, I think Watkins is gone.

I agree. Watkins has had three years to develop and hasn't made the grade.

I am pleased with what I've heard about Ball at the safety position, and it might end up being a better spot for him than corner ... but I do not believe that Brown can really be counted on as quality depth at safety. The fact that he has looked good while being tried at corner could be the one thing that saves him from being cut.

Right now, I'd say the safety position pans out as Sensabaugh and M. Hamlin at strong safety and K. Hamlin, Ball and Smith at free safety, with Ball most likely getting on the field in some subpackages and possibly as the fourth corner. That gives us five safeties.

Ball's ability to play both positions could actually hurt Brown's chances of making the team, but I think he'll be among five corners kept -- Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Mickens and Brown.

vela, normally a fan of your postings, but this is a stretch...

we're always excited about the secondary....

The year we got Anthony Henry.... the year that we drafted scrandrick, jenkins, and traded for pacman....

we've got to wait and see if these players can step up. Im excited but lets not say problem solved already...

Vela

at least you can understand his stuff I dislike the Grizz

if you disagree with Grizz you get kicked off BTB site

I feel good about the secondary–

The wide receiver corps?

Not so much.

I agree.. Next years draft should be heavy on WR and OL..

My concern still falls on the O-line. Adams will likely continue to decline. Kosier is still having foot problems, you never know which Holland we will get, and Proctor is terrible.

The O-line makes the team. Plain and simple. If We can stay out of third and longs, we will be very successful.

Ken and DeAngelo Smith along with Sensy and M Hamlin will be the safeties, with Ball playing CB/S hybrid. Doubt Brown makes the cut.

4 CBs
4 safeties.
1 CB/S

Keeping Bueler and Mcgee will mean going lite at a couple spots.

If Dallas had be thinking safety first in 2006, Watkins would've tackled his way off the team long ago.
