Tony Romo's back related issues had a visible impact on the QB's performance last season and at least two former Dallas quarterbacks are expressing some slight concerns.
Recently former Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback turned NFL broadcaster Troy Aikman spoke out about his concerns with Tony Romo and his two recent back surgeries. Aikman, who had back surgery during his own playing career, talked the folks over at the mothership about his concerns for Romo and what multiple procedures during the past year could ultimately mean.
"I came back in a relatively short period of time because of when I had my surgery, so he's at least afforded more time to get ready, but having said that, two back surgeries in less than a year at his age, I would be a bit concerned." - Troy Aikman
Considering that Aikman attributes his own early retirement more to back issues than he does the normally assumed concussion issue, the legendary Cowboys passer's concerns are understandable. Although he openly admits that he has little information about Tony's condition, Troy is cautioning everyone to avoid being overly optimistic about how well Romo is allegedly doing with his recovery.
Now Wade Wilson, formerly Aikman's back up, and currently the Dallas quarterbacks coach has spoken out about his own concerns for his primary passer.
"There's some concern, just from a personal level. I saw what happened with Troy and his back. But it’s two different injuries from what I’ve been told and that the rehab is going great and it should be fine. But it’s always a concern when you start having multiple injuries at the same spot." - Wade Wilson
Coming as it does right on the heels of Aikman's comments, Wilson's statement does give pause for the average Cowboys fan. After the team invested a large chunk of change into their franchise quarterback less than eighteen months ago, having that player forced to undergo the knife twice on the same part of his body does begin to raise questions.
Jerry Jones and the Cowboys brain-trust would have us to believe that all is unicorns and rainbows with Tony Romo's recovery. The Dallas owner has been reassuring everyone in the media that there is no cause for concern.
"He is ahead of where we expected him to be." - Jerry Jones
Of course no matter his quarterbacks health, Jerry has seats to sell, and this is a song and dance that we have heard before out of the Cowboys. We have been re-assured of similar things regarding people like Jay Ratliff, Anthony Spencer, and DeMarcus Ware. Eventually the team acknowledged that the players in question were in much worse shape than what was being reported. You have to wonder just how much of the smoke that we are currently seeing is the result of an unseen but smoldering fire.
While I would like to assume that the team's failure to take a quarterback in the recent draft is a positive sign, I cannot help but wonder. Romo's back issue has been nagging at me for some time, and when someone as close to the situation as Wade Wilson speaks out, it makes the hairs on the back of stand up. I hope I am wrong, but we have been down this road before. Only time will tell for sure. One thing is for certain, the 2014 Cowboys will only go as far as Tony Romo can take them; and if he is still experiencing back issues, they are not going very far.
