News: BTB: Why last year doesn’t matter in the NFL and why it’s okay to be optimistic

7 1/2 years and no NFL Championship Game for a Garrett-led team certainly doesn't seem to indicate that can happen.
If you are implying that this is a permanent condition that would contradict the laws of impermanence.

I think you’re missing the message in the OP’s post. None of the 2016 NFC Division Champs repeated as such in in 2017. Furthermore, only 1, Atlanta, of the 2016 NFC playoff teams were in the playoffs in 2017. And that’s not an outlier in today’s NFL.

Are you sure that's not an outlier? I seem to recall it being extremely unusual that only one NFC playoff team made it to the playoffs the following year.

The NFC is super stacked unlike the AFC though. That's with A-Rod injured, this year the NFC North will run 3 deep again.

Cowboys fans are getting impatient for another championship. I understand, folks, I'm one of you. But let's try to be nice to each other anyway.

I am optimistic the team might make the playoffs this year. I anticipate weeks 15, 16 and maybe 17 having some importance. I will also be rooting for the Cowboys to get some preseason wins. We are already 1-0 this preseason with that 6-0 win over Philly. Need to keep that win streak alive and hope it continues week 1.

Win steak? I want some win steak!

the most important thing to the jones family has already come out they are the number one franchise in money making that tops all winning is not really all that important any more

Only 1 making is, but not a turnover of 2 or 3 in the playoff qualifiers. I was on my cell phone at a bar and need to do a little deeper look-see for prior years. The one thing I feel very comfortable about is the prediction that all 6 NFC 2017 playoff teams will repeat in 2018 will not come to fruition.

The AFC is a different story, at least in the North and East. Those divisions just plain suck except at the top.

I've pointed out in past threads the improbability of Garrett leading this team to a Super Bowl championship based on historical data. Presenting it was a process that I don't have time to do again (and I didn't save it anywhere to cut and paste), but suffice it to say, that coaches who win Super Bowls after more than five years with a team are few and far between.

Now, it doesn't account for all the variables that could possibly affect that (such as how many coaches get more than five years if they don't lead a team to an title game), but someone else can calculate that if they want. The evidence on Super Bowl winners shows that for whatever reasons, winning after five years with a team is rare.

But what the hell, sun shines on a dog's *** sometimes right? That's what we're going with?[/QUOTE]

then I'll call on perspective. Yes all this redundant back and forth leaves little to nothing fresh to say other then we're all regurgitating the
strongly held views over and over. So with that you expect me to let the continual bashing to go unchallenged.

Anything can happen in the NFL. Every new NFL season is always a new chance for teams that fell short of the playoffs the season before. The NFL is intrinsically designed to be a parity-driven league; the draft, revenue sharing, the salary cap, compensatory draft picks, even the schedule; everything about the NFL is designed so that every team from every market has a legit opportunity to compete year-in and year-out.

Fact is, the ‘competitive balance’ in the league gives each team hope of finishing at the top of the standings regardless of its record the previous season. Sometimes for no other reason than that other teams in the division are even worse. In the NFL, this is called parity.

Yet you wouldn’t notice that if you were to look at the majority of season outlooks published at this time of the year, as most of them seem to do little more than copy last year’s standings and add a little “surprise” here or there.

Case in point: SI.com’s Prediction for every NFL team’s 2018 season record published last month. It’s a 5,800+ word missive in which author Jonathan Jones boldly declares that “next season’s playoffs will probably look a lot like last season’s,” and has all eight division champions from 2017 repeating in 2018.

LOL.......classic, homer, dumb logic garbage. So we have a shot like everyone cuz anything can happen?

All the chicken littles need to take a deep breath and look at history and reality.
Ya,the " message " that didn't sail over my head was that Cleveland will still be sitting on the #1 pick when the 2019 draft comes around,,,that's what I took away from the O.P.'s articleo_O

I can understand sunshine pumping articles. but to say last year didnt count is just being childish. You might as well say "the only years that count is when we win the SB" albeit it will be shorter. Still very very tacky. OR just say the last 22 years were practice years.

Last year really mattered because we watch a young coach do something in 2 years that Garrett hasnt done, and JJ hasnt done since 95? yea, its been that horrendous. If nothing else, last year was the year to wipe our hands of this era and do what was right. Again we chose not to do that and so here we are, going into a new year practically calling a coordinator the new DC and hoping he becomes the next HC. Last year has most fans in 1 of 2 moods, "JG better make something happen" or "yea, we know, same ol same ol".

The new jokes and the old jokes will come around. "Hey Guys, Breaking news, Dallas is the first team to lose in TC"

Most of us are going to try and be hopeful, but lets not deny that the underlying factor will be "JG only keeps proving he cant do it" and rightly so when you watch a second year coach do something he cant do. To make it worse, a divisonal rival to boot. To make it sting, their first trophy. We are taught to not forget history, well lets also remember that, to be fair because thats all Dallas has lately.

we know whats going to happen tho. Cowboy fans are going to put on their big boy pants, go out and support this team and do it with baited breath.

Bashing is a good thing, it means the fans still give a damn about the direction of this team and long for a return back to it's glorious history. When the bashing stops and we become complacent with the consistent mediocrity, we essentially become the Browns and forums such as this one, become unnecessary.

2 playoff wins in over 20 years. Being the #1 seed twice and losing the first game.

You can't pin 20 years worth of futility on garrett. He has had two or three really good years recently where we could have had a deep run. You keep stringing 12 plus win seasons together and it will all come together soon enough.
