As we all know, most of the roster is set by now. The coaches know who they plan on keeping, but they aren't saying. The last preseason game is a "showcase game" so soon-to-be-cut players can audition for other teams. But, it isn't too late to make a push for a roster spot in close-call roster decisions. Nick Stephens will probably play the whole game. Some of the players are battling for those practice squad slots.
I think Tanney makes the 53. Garrett was all smiles shaking Tanney's hand after that six minute drive at the end of the game. Tanney didn't throw any interceptions and the third down passes to Smith and Benford were absolutely perfect throws. I think Orton probably shut down the "cut Orton" cries, but I still think Tanney makes it to the 53. And, from what I saw of Cincy's backup, I think they would prefer Tanney. I don't think he makes it through waivers to get to the practice squad. I think Tanney has the "it" factor and you can't let quarterbacks like that get away.
Also, I think Heath has earned a roster spot. I can see a future with Heath and Wilcox as the starting safeties. I think Johnson is history. You can't make the team from the trainer's table two years in a row. After last night's special teams disasters, McCray might be kept just for that.
I don't see six wide receivers. I'm a Beasley fan, but with Harris as the punt and kick returner, and Williams, Dez, and Austin as the apparent top three, and again with the special teams problems, I am beginning to believe Armstrong or Benford might take the fifth spot. Beasley's injury was also bad timing for him. Beasley needs to play Thursday and he needs to be in sync with Stephens. Coale is probably better off somewhere else. He is probably a good player, but has never really been healthy enough to make a serious roster push here. Rogers and Green have disappeared and most people don't even know Amos is on the roster.
Oline is a big question mark. I don't see any reason to keep ten. Bernadeau can play either guard spot, Free can play RG, RT, and has played LT. Frederick can play guard with Costa at center. Kowalski and Arkin have both played both guard spots and even some center. In other words, you don't need to keep one backup for every starter. I see it this way: Smith, Leary, Frederick, Bernadeau, Free, Parnell, Costa, Bell, and one of the Arkin/Kowalski/Livings group. I think Livings wants to take his guaranteed money and go home. I think I'd let him do that. Arkin has shown vast improvement since last year, has not done poorly when playing with the first string, and he is bigger than Kowalski. So I would give him the last spot. I think this is where Tanney's roster spot comes from.
After the starters, the linebackers are an interesting situation. Sims is too good and too versatile not to be on the roster, although with his concussion history and the fact that Durant has been getting second team MLB practice, they may be ready to keep younger guys in his spot. Still, Sims does bring an attitude and is a very good player. I think they keep him. Holloman obviously has earned a roster spot. That's 5. So, who is the 6th? I think McSurdy is more prepared to play linebacker, but McGee is more athletic. Since the sixth LB spot is really a special teams spot, I think they keep McGee. Cameron Lawrence has flashed at times and may be a surprise keeper, but I think he and Taylor Reed go to the practice squad.
Cornerback is probably the most set position on the team as far as the roster goes. Pellerin has made huge strides, but to keep him they would have to go 6 at the position or cut Moore. I don't see that happening unless they cut McCray and go light at safety. With Moore's versatility that is a possibility.
I think running back is set. I also think we got the answer to who would get the bulk of the carries if Murray were injured. Looks like Tanner is the first choice although Randle finally started looking like a drafted running back.
DL. Hmmm. I think this is the most unsettled position on the team. Ware, Ratliff, Hatcher, Spencer is obvious. Bass makes plays, and can play DE as well as DT. I think Selvie has earned a spot, Hayden looks like a lock. Lissemore missing all that time has hurt his chances. Wilbur plays on special teams, but that may be his only saving grace. I haven't seen anything from him as a DE that makes me want to keep him on the roster. Pendleton is quick for a big guy in the middle. He might be a roster surprise. Cohen and Gibson are probably on the outside looking in. This is the position that most needs the last pre-season game to show something.
TE is set. Witten, Hannah, Escobar, Rosario. Smith is a big guy with good hands and last night he showed he can get down the seam. Still, he is probably destined for the practice squad.
