Bucs hiring Koetter as head coach....

Yea this surprised no one. I don't get the Smith firing either. Likely behind the door stuff that won't ever get made public.

I was listening to SIRIUS NFL radio recently and they said that one of the Bucs' front office personnel, when asked why they fired Smith, said "8-24" (his record the last two years). Rather short sighted, if true. In 2014 he had no QB, and in 2015 he had a rookie QB. They showed signs of life this past season with Winston at QB, and would likely have continued to improve. The only smart part of this was that they kept the same offensive system in place, so Winston won't have to learn a new offense.

Here's what I read:

The Eagles were going after Koetter hard to be their HC. And the Bucs didn't want to lose him because they thought he worked well with Winston and they did not want him to start over again with another OC and a new system. One of the prime reasons young QB's fail is the constant turnover in OC's and offensive systems. The Bucs didn't want to go there.

So to maintain stability for Winston and keep Koetter in the fold, they had to sacrifice Lovie Smith and promote Koetter to HC.

I think that these hires are bringing into focus what a joke the Rooney Rule is. These teams are going through the motions with interviews with coaches they have no intentions of hiring, simply to conform with a rule they never should have added in the first place.

Thanks guys. I'm just glad I'm not a Bucs fan.

For the record, if you promote from within, the Rooney Rule doesn't apply. So it wasn't as issue for the Bucs and Giants, for example.

I didn't read the article you cited, but that explanation brings the reason for the firing into light (more so than "he was fired because he went 8-24"...which is what I heard on the radio).

Are you sure on that?

I think having more minority GMs has minimized the need for anything like the Rooney rule.

There's only a handful of them out there.

True, but there was just one (Ozzie Newsome) for a very long time. So progress is being made at the main decision-maker for the HC position. And they are less likely to discriminate.
