Gaines Adams seemed eager to get started Monday, but how quickly the first-round pick gets to training camp depends on negotiations. The No. 5 pick, linebacker A.J. Hawk, signed for six years and $37.5-million. Adams' deal likely will be considerably higher because the salary cap has increased from $102-million to about $109-million. Agent Fletcher Smith said he doesn't expect talks to begin any time soon.

Is it just me or is that 2 different thoughts and both are incomplete?

Whew.

I have no idea what AJ Hawk last year at 5 to the Packers has to do with Adams this year at 4 to the Buccaneers, 3 days after the end of the Draft and already there's talk of a holdout because the salary cap increased by 7 million.

I have no idea the point of that.

I have no idea, the salary cap doesn't affect what a draft pick is going to get at where he's slotted, he'll get what the player who was taken w/ the same pick a year ago got

Here's the actual item from the Times --

http://www.sptimes.com/2007/05/01/Bucs/Bucs_cut_ties_with_fi.shtml

MONEY TALK: Gaines Adams seemed eager to get started Monday, but how quickly the first-round pick gets to training camp depends on negotiations.

Contract terms for last season's No. 4 pick, offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, were not disclosed.

The No. 5 pick, linebacker A.J. Hawk, signed for six years and $37.5-million.

Adams' deal likely will be considerably higher because the salary cap has increased from $102-million to about $109-million.

Agent Fletcher Smith said he doesn't expect talks to begin any time soon.

"It depends on the team, and don't believe it's the agent's fault, " Smith said. "When we get toward the end, sometimes the teams take a lot of time to get to us.

"I would guess we wouldn't get started talking about a contract for several months, which is fine with me."

The Times never said anything about a holdout. That was whatever blogger misinterpreted the item the Times wrote.

The next CBA needs to address the rookie contracts given to high draft picks. No other business in the world will pay someone multi million dollar money right after college with such high risk of failure.

yea couldnt agree more im so surprised that the NFLPA hasnt agreed to this already..these expensive rookies get veterans cut, because a rookie whos not that good but is too expensive to cut will always stay on the team... the nba used to have out of control rookie deals and then they agreed on 5 year deals that dont pay a crazy amount... the NFL needs to do something about this

I don't think hes locked into the previous years salary but they are based off of them for the most part. I think the cap does figure in but not as much as the other factors.

Completely agree.

There are very few things that I can point to in the NFL as being a completely broken system...but rookie contracts are certainly one.

The NFL should take a page from the NBA's book and implement maximum rookie contracts. Sure, they try to limit rookie contracts with the rookie cap, but some clever bookkeeping can easily beat that system.

Vernon Davis gets drafted last year and upon signing his contract becomes the highest paid TE in the game. If that isn't an indication of something SEVERELY wrong, I don't know what is.

He wants to start the talks based on a LB contract from last year?

I think this is the usual procedure for negotiations.

I think he will get an increase from that. I also think that the rookie pool that is given to each team will likely go up because of the salary cap increase too, which will increase these rookie contracts a bit also.
