Budda Baker

I gave up on the cowboys drafting a true free safety early a long time ago. It's the one position in the secondary that can make a significant, immediate impact.

I could see the team valuing him more as a CB because he's such a fantastic playmaker in underneath zone and man coverages, and would be an elite run support CB

He's not someone I'd want guarding a Brandon Marshall or Alston Jeffery but I like his chances going up against Odell Beckham

I'm on board. I like him. Don't know that Rod would.

He is capable of being a Swiss Army Knife like Byron Jones, except with more physicality in run game and more ability to create turnovers. He's like a healthier Tyrann Mathieu. His lack of height is the only reason he's not a first rounder IMO.
How often did Sanders get hurt

We did not play our defense that way last year. Church was protected all season long. He went to the big nickel on passing downs for a reason.

And that's why the D was more efficient with Wilcox and Heath, they both can play up or down. Church is a one dimensional player and Cowboys are going away from that on D.

You're out of your mind if you think Rod Marinelli is running his base D with a 190 lb SS. Absolutely no chance. He'd either be a nickle back or a single high FS in our scheme and we have both covered already. I like the player but I don't see how he fits at all.

I bet you said same thing when Jimmy traded for Thomas Everett.

Is that true? I am not so sure about that. Yes, they moved Jones around a bit but Church was pretty much a standard SS here.

True, but how much of that was because Church was a leader on D versus not having a lot of options behind Church. The era of passing is forcing teams to find players with position flex, not just on the front 7 but in the back 7 as well. Marinelli never used any player like he used Byron Jones with his other teams either.

Having both safeties who can play either center field or down in the box, boundary corner or over the slot is not a fad, it is the new NFL. The Cowboys may be a rushing team, but the NFL is a passing league.

How often do you get hurt? What an insipid question. You brought up Bob Sanders, not me. Thomas Everett was 5'9 and played safety just fine. Jim Leonard was even shorter (5'8) and lighter (188) than Baker and was a very good SS. Your generalization that ALL short players are fragile is pure ignorance and handy to further your agenda.

Yes Bob Sanders was injury prone, so was Polamalu, but when they were healthy they were ELITE at their positions helping their team win CHAMPIONSHIPS. Mark Twain said it best, It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

I still don't see them playing cover 2 or quarters to the point where they are going to need a lot of 2 deep S. Quarters is less demanding over the top for obvious reasons.

They drafted a SS type in Frazier as well. Obviously you want dynamic players so you can switch up who goes where and make it harder for offenses to isolate players but we just don't run the schemes you are talking about.

Frazier is not a starter. Especially on a team contending for a championship. Baker maybe shorter, but he's twice the football player that Frazier is on his BEST day.

So what they drafted him as a S and he is a SS. My point is that they draft players for two distinct S roles.

Let's be honest what this is about: you trying to find a spot for your pet cat on the team.

Yes, I like Baker but there are other good safeties in this draft honestly. I just want anyone the Cowboys pick to be able to stop the run and generate turnovers in the passing game. Baker is one of those type of DBs, no more, no less. Judging a player on based on a stop watch or a ruler is one of my biggest pet peeves. Watch what he does on the field first and foremost.

And comparing Frazier to Baker is specious, there is a reason why Frazier was taken at the end of the draft.

Baker gets destroyed by blocks and I have watched far too many people run through his tackles to call him a run stopper. That is before peolpe high point the ball over him all the time. The receivers in the NFCE are huge.

He is a talent player but he is one of many and not worth the 28th pick IMO.

Never said to draft him with 28th. Only defending against the naysayers who said Baker is not capable of playing for Cowboys.

Yeah you are trying to find him a place. He would come in on nickel. He would not start over Heath who actually can play both the SS and FS roles.

Bat Im not trying to start something its a legitimate question. Liter players have a tendencies to injury?

I think people are a little too dismissive of his size. Not because it will keep him from making plays or anything like that, but because it's a fact that someone his size is going to struggle to stay healthy over a 16 game NFL season. He struggles to hold 190 pounds on his frame and he's an agressive safety. I'll be surprised if he doesn't have injury problems throughout his career

People were saying the same think about Karl Joseph. He got his weight up to 205 then went out and had a great season for Oakland.
