I'm busy creating my own business. A bunch of fears showed up when I decided to do that. I realized I needed to put effort into building confidence and stamping out all self-limiting beliefs. I would like to share some sources of information and inspiration that are helping me. In turn, if you have something that's been working for you, please share it here. Here are mine:

1. Brian Tracy's book, Maximum Achievement. I have both the regular book and the audio book. The information in it is so valuable, I'm putting effort into living by this book, not just reading it. I have my favorite passages underlined, which I review regularly. I made up a file of my favorite quotes from it and I keep it in my phone. Recently I moved from Nampa, Idaho (near Boise) back to Omaha, Nebraska, a 1200 mile drive. I didn't waste the time. I listened to the Maximum Achievement audio book, and some other motivational books and some French lessons. I didn't even listen to very much music.

2. Fight Mediocrity. There's a Youtube channel named this. It's excellent. The guy reviews various well-known motivational books. He encapsulates the ideas in a nutshell by drawing animations with his explanations. He's originally from the Republic of Georgia in the former Soviet Union where he was extremely poor as a child. Now he's a successful business man in the United States. His videos help keep me motivated and viewing life from a success-oriented standpoint instead of the self-defeating one I used to have. Plus, it's providing me with a great reading list of books I know will be helpful.

There are more things I could recommend, but these are my top two. Now it's your turn. Post your motivational/success sources.

Discipline
Have goals but treat them as stepping stones once you achieve them, not the destination
Be your own critic
Have a sense of self worth and don't lose your identity ie do the right thing even if it is difficult so you can look at yourself in the mirror
Work hard at your craft
Have fun along the way. Don't take yourself too seriously. Keep things in perspective

Most important motivation: FAMILY

Maxwell Maltz Psycho-Cybernetics helped me get through college.

The Personal Power program helped me take my career to the next level.

TNT by Claude Bristol is also very good.

My two kiddos.

Gets me through just about anything.

Seriously, If you put them first then it's a domino effect.......I'm not perfect at it by any stretch of the imagination but if my first question in most circumstances is "How does this benefit my kids?" It works out for all of us.

Not patting myself on the back or trying to be all self-righteous. Just my M.O.

Thanks for these great responses. It's always great to connect with others who are committed to bettering themselves. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to associate with people who have a positive outlook on life. For a while it was the opposite for me. I was hanging with some very bitter and negative people. That takes its toll on you. It makes it almost impossible to stay positive and focused on your goals. I had to move to get away from one person who was my roommate. I don't hate bitter people -- they've probably been hurt and need professional help. I just don't want to be around them.

Since I started this thread, I received an e-mail with a link to a quality article, "7 Common Mistakes To Avoid If You Want To Achieve Your Goals And Dreams In Life." It's well worth the read. I'm glad to read any hints/links/book recommendations anyone has. Post them in this thread if you want. Even after this thread has come and gone, always feel free to PM me if you come across any material that you find is of good quality. Here's that link:

I've started numerous businesses and have worked with thousands of business owners since the mid 80's, here's what I would suggest:

-Motivation through books, CD and videos is great (and there are some good suggestions here), but building a business around sound business principles rules all. The motivation that comes from seeing those credit card deposits will outlast any motivational talk by Tony Robbins.

-Spend most of your time on learning marketing. That's the true power within any business.

-Marketing is nothing more than mathematics combined with behavioral psychology.

-When it comes to marketing the key word is TEST. Test everything. Do not assume you know the answer without testing the premise.

-Instead of trying to "predict & control" go with "sense & react". Business plans are like... Well there was the quote by Mike Tyson when it came to having a plan when you enter the boxing ring, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face." Same way with business. That's why I rely on the principles of good business to see me through.

-Doing "What you love" sounds great, but if your business isn't making money, you'll learn to hate it very quickly.

Some great business building books?
