Here's Todd Archer's report from Denver ...

Linebacker Kevin Burnett will return to Dallas to have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, according to two sources. The surgery is scheduled for Friday.

Burnett's availability for the Sept. 7 season opener at Cleveland is in question. Normally, players miss three to four weeks to recover from a scope.

This will be at least Burnett's fifth surgery since coming to the Cowboys in 2005. He has had hip, ankle, shoulder and anterior cruciate ligament surgeries.

While he has had numerous surgeries, he has only missed three games.

A prolonged absence could lead to more playing time for Bobby Carpenter, who has been working on the same substitute defensive packages as Burnett.

Wow, five surgeries and he's only missed three games. Hopefully, KB will be back soon and Bobby will shine in his absence.

This pretty much amounts to IT for Bobby. I still have Ted Bruschi dreams for him but they are fading

I think this pretty much amounts to IT for Burnett as well. I don't see Dallas investing a new contract with an injury risk like Burnett. He''ll be gone after this year. Carpenter has gotta step up now in the Nickel.

the good thing about Burnett is the fact he has only missed three games, but I can't see Jerry giving him a new contract unless he comes back and plays lights out!..looks light LB will be on the draft board next year

I think that he is a pretty valuable player. I hope that they resign him.

I don't know, he's certainly not going to get a big deal to come back but I can see treating him as we did Columbo and Gurode (1st time he was UFA) - let him test the market, bring him back if it is reasonable. Keep in mind that we may be very light at ILB going into next year

What's it going to be then, eh?

Given his injury issues, I would as soon let him go if he gets an outrageous offer. We can find another linebacker just like him next April. It is not like he is a rare talent IMO.

Burnett's the kind of guy that some poorly-run 43 team will pay in hopes that he finally lives up to his potential. I won't be sorry to see him go.

I expect us to draft an ILB or two fairly high next year, which will be fun. :)

I can only imagine what would happen if we took an inside backer in the first round.

the panic would be historic.

sure but we might be replacing Thomas and Burnett. Hell, we might even find out that Carp can't play. So that might influence the decision

You think? I would love it. Gotta love getting a mean, strong, crazy SOB at inside linebacker.

But you're right, I guess there'd be panic if we didn't take a WR. :)

Which of the following two scenerios is more likely come mid-October:

1. Carpenter emerges as a solid and productive player (on defense).

2. Burnett bounces back from his latest surgery and is producing big plays.

Of the two, I think #2 is more likely. Even with his injuries, I think Burnett has a better chance of making quality contributions to this defense.

I left off #3 (neither of them does particularly well) and #4 (both do great). Not sure why I did that. :)

Abebeta is right on: keep him but ONLY for the right price. I also agree with Choc.Lab: Detroit or Cinci will pay him outlandish money and it probably won't matter: he'll be gone IMO and oh well, because he's been pretty average: in health and performance.

Jerry Jones takes positive stance on Burnett's injury

Linebacker Kevin Burnett suffered a knee injury in the morning practice against the Broncos and underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam on Wednesday afternoon.

Owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will know more in a couple of days but said he's encouraged by the initial MRI results.

"We will see how he does the next couple of days but we got a little encouragement on his MRI," Jones said.

Asked if it was a bruise or a tear, Jones said "I am not getting into that. I am just going to say we got some encouragement."

If it is serious, it is just another setback in what has been an injury-plagued NFL career for Burnett.

The former second-round pick from Tennessee tore his right anterior cruciate ligament and was placed on injured reserve 13 games into his rookie year.

Last fall he was in line to replace Akin Ayodele as the starter at inside linebacker before undergoing arthroscopic surgery to have bone chips removed from his right ankle.

He played all 16 games as Ayodele's backup in the base defense and the starter in the nickel defense.

His role is expected to be the same in 2008. He will backup starter Zach Thomas while start passing downs in the nickel and dime defenses.

How many first-round graded ILBs have there been in recent years? Many years, there isn't even a first round prospect at ILB period.

But I doubt many fans would gripe if we drafted a Patrick Willis level ILB in the 1st round.

Jones' comments almost make me think that it's probably serious, but there's a hope that it's not.
