Unhappy with deal, Burress refuses to practice; Shockey shows up

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Star wide receiver Plaxico Burress is refusing to practice because the New York Giants haven't renegotiated a new contract since winning the Super Bowl.

Burress reported to Giants Stadium for the mandatory minicamp Wednesday. But he says he told the coaching staff he won't work out without a new deal.

Burress, who battled through an injury-hampered season last year, caught the game-winning touchdown in the Giants' stunning 17-14 victory over the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, tight end Jeremy Shockey showed up for minicamp Wednesday, despite hints he had made last weekend with the New York media that he might skip it.

Shockey, who isn't expected to participate in drills, headed for treatment with Giants trainers for the broken leg he suffered last season.

On Saturday during a promotional event, in his first public comments since breaking his leg last December, Shockey had made comments putting into question whether he would attend the mandatory minicamp.

"Who knows? I might go to see my mother in Texas. I have no idea," Shockey said Saturday.

Shockey shared his gripes with reporters event Saturday.

"Unlike the Giants, I'm going to be quiet," he said. "They've released multiple things about myself and if you look back into the media, there's always a source. Well, I'd like to know who this source is and we'll go over here and we'll deal with it ourselves, because I haven't said one negative thing toward the Giants in the newspapers."

Shockey was a no-show for the team's Super Bowl victory parade in New York, its visit to the White House and its championship ring ceremony.

In the weeks leading up to the draft, the New Orleans Saints and several other teams approached the Giants about a trade for the oft-injured Pro Bowler. The Giants listened, but that was it.

Information from ESPN's Sal Paolantonio and The Associated Press was used in this report.

I never liked Burress. The Giants are gonna have to give him T.O./Moss money or he won't be happy, lol. And we all know he isn't T.O. or Moss.

Not practicing actually seems to work for Burress. Perhaps a lack of a sense of timing helps him catch Eli's inaccurate passes.

How is this different then, well, pretty much all of last season?

I dont think if I were the Giants I'd worry one bit about whether he practiced or not.

The guy also has a glass jaw (or plexiglass leg). If he doesn't practice, he might actually be able to play in a few more games.

Plax holding out. Strahan retiring. NY FA loses. Drunk Commander player missing practice. Joe Gibbs retiring. Mcnabb w/ a hurt shoulder. What an offseason so far.

I agree.

This team can't handle success. This is just the beginning of a dreadful season for the Giants.

Thats basically what they had last year. The difference between 10-6 and 8-8 is usually not that much over all.

All joking aside, he probably does deserve more money though.

I think it is pretty funny he is basically holding out without having to pay fines for not reporting.

Yes, he probably does. Unfortunate for him that he signed a 6 year deal the year before the new CBA. That's the way life goes.

If I'm the NYG, I might throw him some extra $, but there's no way I'm paying him like one of the elite receivers. He gets dinged up too often, and as Aikman said during one game, his inability to practice severely hampers the timing of their offense.

You forgot to add Eagles paying top dollar for system CB who is getting burnt by second Tier WRs (isn't that the only kind of WRs in Phi ?), Commanders hiring an assistant to be the HC, etc...
