NCAA | B. Davis offered North Carolina job

Fri, 3 Nov 2006

Ivan Maisel and Joe Schad, of ESPN.com, reports former Cleveland Browns head coach Butch Davis has been tacitly offered the head coaching job at North Carolina University. A source said Butch Davis has the job if he wants it, but the school "would like a commitment soon, in two to three weeks from Butch." The school fired sixth-year head coach John Bunting, effective at the end of the 2006 season. Davis has started to assemble a coaching staff from the ranks of NFL and major college programs should he accept the job from North Carolina.

I don't think we will ever see him as a HC in the NFL again. I loved it when he was on our coaching staff and always thought he did an outstanding job. He does a great job on the NFL Network and hopefully will be successful at North Carolina. That is a tough place to coach considering that is primarily a basketball school.

He's waiting for coker to get fired at miami, then he'll move in. He's a great recruiter and would bring instant credibilty back to miami. If he dosent take the job within a week we known where he's heading.

alot of Miami people dont want him back though...he flat out lied before taking the Browns jobs...

the Miami job may be going to Barry Alvarez or the HC at Rutgers (who was a Miami assistant)

Of course he has the job if he wants it. I'm sure that Pete Carroll and Joe Pa would have the job if they wanted it. I guess Anybody that took it would be an upgrade. No way he goes to Carolina. He can't get enough players into school to compete nationally.

Butch just got one step closer to the miami job as coker adds another nail to his coffin. Miami losses 17-10 at home to virgina tech. Dont believe that miami people dont want butch back. They are dying for him, because miami fans believe the downfall of the program stems from recruiting, and butch was the master at that. The guy has an eye for talent and is relentless recruiter. Ask larry coker what kind of talent evaluator butch davis was. Coker won off his guys, ever since then its gone downhill. The butch davis gravy train is gone, and so is coker.

go gators!!!!!!

That's one of the things with the "Butch Davis to UNC" rumors I have wondered about. He will not be able to get the same types of "student" athletes into UNC that he can at Miami. Will be interesting to see if he accepts the offer in the near future (I think they wanted an answer within the next 2 or 3 weeks).

If he doesn't end up in Miami or FSU or Penn State. He would be crazy to go to North Carolina now and not see how things shake out in the next few weeks. Heck if I was him I'd try to get the job at University of South Florida before I would go to Chapel Hill.

As a Miami Hurricane fan, I'm hoping that Butch Davis comes back to get that program turned in the right direction, Larry Coker is a joke. Two consecutive loses just won't cut it at the U!

Before throwing out a name like Pete Carroll, you should realize that he really wanted to take the Carolina job before it was offered to John Bunting. Yes, that is the truth. Look it up.

Oh, and Mack Brown sure didn't struggle building a VERY competitive program at UNC. Butch wouldn't either.

Butch won't go to Miami. He burned a lot of bridges there and I'd be surprised if they wanted him back. I think he ends up in Chappel Hill or East Lansing.

Mac Brown built a nice program there that never won the ACC. The only big game he ever played was a FSU beat down 51-3, at least I think that was the score. If it is such a great job then why did MAC leave with the GREAT program that he had established. He had 2 years of success by beating a bunch of nobody's, and a horrible non conference schedule. Football will ALWAYS be second fiddle to hoops at Carolina, and I can't see Butch being second fiddle at a basketball school. Also, tell me this...If he had his program on such solid ground then they should have been good for at least a couple years after he left right? Bunting won a bowl game his first year, and sice has been horrible. Mac saw the writing on the wall, knew he couldn't get teh players he wanted consistently, and got the heck out of Carolina.
