Buying music - how to best support artists?

Hey guys,

Buying a cd at a cd store, buying a cd at a walmart-type store, downloading a cd off amazon.com, etc

which way does the artist receive the most "money back"?

I want to buy all of the cds that I've *cough* downloaded *cough* of my favorite bands to support them and this is something I've always wondered
