There is no sense beating my chest saying “I told you so” for it was only an obvious hunch that the division rivals would play like they did. Philly and Washington played two of the cellar-dwellers and, as expected, beat them soundly. That is what teams in one of the best divisions in football are supposed to do.
The Giants, on the other hand, are paying a steep price for winning the division last year. Seattle came with their guns on. They can afford to do that, as the paper tigers, known as the Seahawks, will breeze through their division once again and are better able to prepare themselves for the bigger games they face (like this one against the Giants). Gee. Doesn’t that sound like the Niners of the 80s and early to mid 90s? After seeing the debacle of St. Louis, Arizona, and Frisco, Seattle gets a free ride once again (just like San Fran way back then).
Not only that, but until the Giants learn how to play pass defense, their woes are going to continue. The bad decisions of Eli, the post-game blow-up of Shockey, and those marvelous stone hands of one Plaxico Burress, sure didn’t help matters either.
One question though. Why would Philly start the game off against such an awful team with a flea-flicker? Don’t you think such plays should be saved for bigger games? You know, like that one on October 8th? Think Bill wasn’t watching? The Eagles didn’t need to do that. They could have just lined right up and hammer their opponent like they did the rest of the game.
Brunell and 22 straight completions – regardless of the opponent, that was impressive. However, if it takes that level of play for the Commanders to get a win, then it is going to be a long season for them. Do that against Jacksonville next week. I dare you.
One other game to mention:
One thing that irritated me greatly was how Tampa threw that game away against Carolina. Third and 5 on the 25, two minutes left, all the Bucs need to do is get a first down and that miraculous comeback from being down 17-0 would be complete. So what do they call? They had Chris Simms throw a bomb that went five yards over Joey Galloway’s head while being double covered!
After that play, school was out, folks. Carolina was going to win that game. This is especially true since Kasey already hit two field goals of over 50 yards! The Panthers have new life now.
What a terrible call that 3rd and 5 play was though. It brought me back to the Campo years.
