Okay, I know what you are thinking. "Hos, we don't need a primer for a bye week, and this is the same information as last year." Well, I am hopeful that at least someone finds this information useful, and it is updated to take into account last year and this year where it applies. So humor me.

There will be a nice surprise at the end of the post. A recipe that is very easy and worth giving a try.

The bye week began in 1990. That means Tom Landry never had a season with a bye week in his 29 year career.

In 1993, there were 2 bye weeks.

The Cowboys overall are 18-4 in the games directly before going into a bye week.

The Cowboys overall are 16-5 in games following the bye week.

The latest bye week the Cowboys have ever had was week 14 in 1990. Now no teams have bye weeks later than week 10.

The earliest is week 3 in 1999 and 2003.

The most common bye week for the Cowboys has been week 4 which has been their bye week 6 times counting this year. Followed closely by weeks 8 and 6, each of which has been 4 times counting this season, next week.

The Cowboys have never had a bye week in week 5.

Jimmy Johnson was 5-0 going into a bye week. 3-2 coming out of a bye week.

Barry Switzer was 3-1 going into a bye week. 4-0 coming out of a bye week.

Chan Gailey was 1-1 going into a bye week. 2-0 coming out of a bye week.

Dave Campo was 2-1 going into a bye week. 1-2 coming out of a bye week.

Bill Parcells was 4-0 going into a bye week. 3-1 coming out of a bye week.

Wade Phillips is 3-1 going into a bye week. He is 3-0 coming out of a bye week.

This year we will face Tennessee at home coming out of the bye week. The Titans used to be the team in Houston when they were the Oilers. We just beat the new team in Houston. A victory next week would make a nice Houston pain sandwich. We are 7-5 all time against the Oilers and Titans. The series is tied 3-3 at Dallas. Dallas has won the last two meetings between the teams.

I hope it will be a nice relaxing off week for all of you.

Don't forget to root for the Bears to beat the Giants, and take your pick between the Commanders and Eagles.

Okay, I promised a nice recipe. Last year I repeated my deadly chili recipe which this year I am hoping to enter in a chili contest. I figured this one is easier and more people can enjoy it.

Get 4 large cucumbers. Skin them and then slice them. Here's a helpful tip. If you cut off one end of a cucumber and then rub the two cut ends together it will draw out a white froth from the cucumber. This froth is the sometimes slightly bitter taste you get in a cucumber. Wash it off and throw the nub end away before skinning or slicing.

Put the cucumber slices in a seal tight bowl or plastic baggie.

Take a large lime and squeeze as much juice out of it as you can onto the cucumber slices. Remove the seeds.

Add two teaspoons of sea salt and a tablespoon of Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy seasoning mix.

Seal the bowl or baggie and shake the mixture up thoroughly.

Let it chill for 2 hours and serve. My friend calls these Mexican pickles. They are so good.

Well gee Hos, now I'm curious about this chili of yours. Mind posting the recipe?

Hostile's Hotter Than Hell Chili

This one is not for sissies.
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups of pinto beans (less if you have a small crock pot)
  • 3 strips of bacon
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 habanero pepper
  • 5 jalapenos
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 5 tablespoons red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon jalapeno powder
  • Course ground black pepper (pepper mill recommended)
2 cups of pinto beans in the crock pot add water to about halfway up the crock pot. Cut 3 strips of bacon into inch squares and add. Cook on low overnight.

Brown the ground beef. Sprinkle a lot of black ground pepper to season the beef. I usually grind the pepper mill for about 15 to 20 seconds. Drain the oil.

Add the ground beef to the cooked beans.

Finely dice all 5 jalapeno peppers, 1 habanero pepper, 1 bell pepper, and 1 red onion. Add to the mixture along with 5 tablespoons of red chili powder, 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper, 1 tablespoon of jalapeno powder.

Cook for 4 hours stirring every 15 minutes.

Serve with grated cheese and Fritos and lots of ice water. Woowee.

Little known but useful fact: capsaicin, which is the compound in hot peppers that causes the burning sensation when you eat them, is more soluble in milk than water due to casein, the protein in milk.

So, if your mouth gets too hot, you can swish with milk to relieve the pain.

Sugar also works. sierra mist works for me.

Lemon juice works fairly well too. No idea why.

You forgot the ice cream. The day after eating your chili you will be saying, COME ON ICE CREAM!:laugh2:

Great Post as always Hos. Hopefully some of the younger posters on this board appreciate the History lessons.

You did lose me on the chili recipe though. Texas chili (ie, real chili) does not have beans in it. I know your not in Texas, so I guess I can overlook that faux paux.

Try the "Mexican pickles." I guarantee you they are good. My friend is an awesome source of simple recipes like that.

hmmm, Eagles or Commanders

Vick and McNabb have to be two of the players I hate most in the NFL. The Commanders are the team I hate most but I hate McNabb more then Vick so that evens out.

The Eagles are 2-1 and lead the division but dropping the Commanders to 1-3 would be priceless.

I hate the Eagles Green but the Skins came out with these horrid gold pants.

Eagles cheerleaders are better looking but are all probably ex escort girls with criminal backgrounds and the Commanders cheerleaders uniform are horrible.

I'm so confused......
