I can't take credit for this rule change idea. Someone else suggested it on another forum. The idea is as follows. Ever year, some week 8, the entire NFC takes its bye week. Then, in week 9, the entire AFC takes its bye week. The advantages would be that, once those two weeks are done, all byes would be done. Then you would no longer have cases where one team leads the division with the most wins, but also has played more games than maybe the team in second place. Once those by weeks are done, every team has played the same number of games. They would also guarantee that every team gets a bye toward the middle of the season. They could swap by year, in other words, one year the AFC does its byes first and the next year, the NFC does so. If there are any disadvantages, at the middle of the season, you would have two weeks in a row with only roughly half as many games. It would mean two weeks in a row with less advertising dollars from the games. However, the rest of the season would have slightly more since no one would be taking a bye. So it works out as the same number of games in the end, and the same advertising opportunities. You just do the reductions all at once for two weeks instead of spreading them out.

My thoughts are this could be good. It could be a positive change.

or instead half the league off do the West divisions (AFC and NFC) and so forth. 4 weeks of bye until that 18th game is added and the extra bye week comes

I actually like this idea. Makes a lot of sense.
