I hate Bye weeks for obvious fan-related reasons. All that said it really can help teams to take that time off and recover from various dings. 7 days off is not much to recover from the toll an NFL game takes on the body.
Bill Parcells once stated here, "I don't coach penalties". I am hoping Wade starts coaching AGAINST them. I grant Flo the leeway to have one false start per game. The guy can't hear and he plays at a high level with very little assistance 12+ weeks a year. But outside that and perhaps the occasional Demarcus Ware offsides call, penalties shouldn't be tolerated. If a DL or LB has more false starts then sacks, he needs a blanket party. That's just silly. It's worse because of the 7 or 8 penalties a game we commit at least 2 will be bogus. And it's not just the Cowboys. The league has come up with inane rules that make a ref's job a nightmare. The league fined Alan Ball for that hit on a defenseless WR which was garbage. Garbage call, garbage fine. He lead with the shoulder and hit shoulder first. That's a perfect from hit. A far cry from the old Ronnie Lott spearing days. Every NFL game I watch at least a few calls are just awful. I consistently see in the hole holding ignored but some backside guy 10 yards away get called for less.
Going into the Bye week Dallas was considered a weak sister in the NFCE. Not so sure that's the case anymore. Philly had McNabb back and still showed they are basically a one dimensional team relying on McNabb to be sharp with his passing while Westbrook makes big plays. Minus those things they really struggle on offense. and McNabb has always been inconsistent. The difference between Romo and McNabb? Lots of playoff wins and that just might be because McNabb had Jimmie Johnson running that defense. Both guys are streaky with a swagger that can uplift the team when on. Neither heart T.O.
The Giants have been everyone's fave but the Saints proved if you can block them you can score at will on them. Brees is a really good player but he looks a whole heck of a lot better when he has 5 to 8 seconds on every pass attempt. Not sure what the Saints OL did so well besides sliding the OL and covering gaps but man if we can do that we should consider it. Brees would look at his 3rd option then consider his retirement fund and still have time to toss the ball deep if need be.
I think everyone knows Wade pretty much has to win 2 playoff games to be back next year. I am not decidedly for or against his return. 3 years is a legit sample and if he doesn't win playoff games he deserves the door. All that said, knowing what he is up against it is silly to whine now about Wade. That issue will settle itself. Everything else is just whining for the sake of whining. Mediots/fans clamoring for him to be fired in season or even bringing that up are just clueless. Dallas either reboots with a new staff in the off-season or they don't at all. Firing the HC/DC and then promoting Garrett who has struggled to handle his side of the ball alone makes zero sense. Wade and Garrett both need this team to win. Wade's legacy has about one last chance. Garrett has plenty of career in front of him but he's fallen in the eyes of the many. He's probably back as a QB Coach if this thing flames out. Both guys are motivated and hungry. A lot better than BP have a cushy job awaiting in Miami.
Everyone pretty much agreed this team took a small step back in talent from last season. T.O. cut, Greg Ellis jettisoned, no 1st round pick et al. It is hard to evaluate talent from afar but the performance has suggested that the loss of talent was significant. I'd say it may take time for that gap to close. time as in this season however. Dallas needs a Ellis-like pass rusher but Ellis always closed rather soft after quick starts. This team needs a strong finisher. And T.O. was awesome until things turned ugly. We'll see if having happy go lucky Miles Austin doesn't benefit Romo when he isn't lazer sharp.
I thought last season was lost because of injury.
Felix is a huge part of the Garrett game-plan even if it that isn't intentional. It's pretty clear Jason's play calls work best once Felix scampers for his 10 yards per carry a couple times. Defenses want to stop Marion Barber at the line of scrimmage before he gets going so the run blitz is an effective tool there. But with Felix in the game if that blitzer misses it likely means getting the kick off team ready. We need Felix and we need Sensabaugh. They are both top 15 Cowboys in order of importance. Maybe Sensabaugh moves down a tad if Mike Hamlin can play but the rest of the safeties are scary bad at times. If Mike Hamlin can play we could cut Ken Hamlin and extend Sansabaugh this off-season while tossing another 3rd/4th round draft choice at safety. These college safeties get better every year at defending the pass because so many schools go 3/4 wides most of the game.
This team certainly can't say they peaked too early. This is definitely a work in progress with so many young guys developing AS they play. Austin, Jenkins, Scandrick, Spencer et al.
If I were a Dallas Cowboys the guy I'd follow is Keith Brooking. We have heard lots of talk about leadership and what it entails but Keith would be my leader. That guy is always into the game. He knows every situation we face and he can take that knowledge onto the field at any time. He is not a phenomenal athlete but he is a hard worker who keeps his head in the game and shows how much he cares about winning. When he chased Austin down the sideline I felt his joy.
Speaking of joy, the Dallas team dog piling Austin and celebrating that "awful" win is something to watch. It seemed as if the weight of the world was on Dallas to win that game. That joy though and getting back to just having fun playing football can be a huge catalyst for further success. time to see if they can get on a roll or if they tighten up and play too tight against Atlanta.
