I probably like Byron more than most. First year CB, doesn't complain being moved around, played pretty damn good in a more aggressive coverage scheme, he can man up, press bail, drop zone, has elite athleticism so he'll end playing a while like Newman, never gets injured. He's started like 52 straight games.
If I'm building a team he's the kind of dude I'd like to have. He's a valuable player.
But, Awuzie is also a promising young dude who I was excited about and never thought would drop to our pick. He's also played pretty well and probably has a bright future ahead of him. He's up in 2 years.
It's not incredibly optimal to have two big CB contracts at the same time. I'd say who cares, if you are collecting the best players you can for a team, contracts in one area should mean more youth in another, but semantics in the NFL are still classically revolving around certain trends. Like not having two CB contracts like that.
I'd say Byron probably completely depends on Awuzie this year. Assuming Byron has another good year. If Awuzie plays at a high level, Byron is probably gone, even though I'd try and get him on a less expensive extension this year. If Awuzie doesn't play great, Byron probably stays.
I'd be trying to get him on a 10m/year extension this year. I'd be fine handing him more guaranteed/signing if it meant an out in 3 years. He's played in 52 straight games, I wouldn't be worried about him mentally or physically. The $$ would be fine even with Amari and Dak.
