Jones is coming off a good year and has 1 season left on his contract. It would make sense to extend him. But how much is he worth? Kyle Fuller just signed a 4yr $56 mil extension with the Bears. Fuller led the league with 7 regular season INTs, 2 tips for INTs, and 1 INT in the playoffs while Jones had 0 INTs. Another big difference is their style of coverage. Jones plays the defender rarely looking back for the ball. This is a medium risk low reward style of coverage. Fuller will play the ball especially in short to medium coverage where he's very aggressive.

4yrs $44 mil is what i think he's worth based on the market value Fuller set.

4yrs $56 million he was a shut down corner. He won’t sign for less than what fuller signed for. Imo

INTs are a bad way to judge a QB, and the Bears D as a while played well. Even Prince had a good year there. I always say to watch out for players who have their best year when everyone else around them is also having career years - remember that Panthers D back in 2015? Norman and Short? Good players, not great.

I think Jones is in the $10-11 million a year range. The problem here with Jones is that we only had really one year to see him at corner due to playing safety in 2016 and 2017, and frankly, he was average there.

I think he’s around Smith, Kirkpatrick, Hayward range. But they signed their contracts a few years ago, so a couple million may need to be added to the 10-11 million.

His style of coverage keeps his ceiling too low. He gave up 2 critical completions against the Rams and the fact that he has never in his career picked off a pass on a guy he was in coverage against is a giant red flag. No way you can call him a shut down corner if you don't have the ability to get the defense off the field.

I agree it's not the only way, but is there anything more important to a team's chanes of winning than an INT or fumble recovery? If Jones brought some other intangible to the table like being a run stuffer or returns kicks i would say pay him top dollar.

By the way i agree that the Bears D was on a roll. Would have loved to have their 27 INTs. Kirkpatrick is a good comparison for Jones.

You call a shutdown corner a corner that shutdown their portions of the field, which is what Byron does.

You're confusing shutdown with ballhawk.

And also Fuller signed his contract before his breakout season so he would cost more than that now.

Can you list all the 'shut down corners' in NFL history who had ZERO, yes ZERO, interceptions in their best year?

I'll wait

Can you list all the cornerbacks that allowed less yards and TDs than Byron while playing the second most snaps of any DB in the league?

I'll wait.

His reputation exceeds his production imo

4/40m is fair

Exactly. A little over a year ago he was ready to be put out to pasture. Now a big contract? I may get killed here but I would consider letting Jones walk. Focus on Smith, Zeke, Dak and Lawrence. I think Lewis is much better than currently thought of right now. I think he replaces Jones quite nicely.

He wasn’t playing corner a year ago.

I’m thinking 12 mil a year but not much difference there
His production is good but he doesn’t get turnovers and that’s what gets you paid

I would encourage you to read my post again, review his stats and then tell me how that year was Revis' best year

I think it’s better to not equate Revis’ 2009 season, which even the elites of elites haven’t achieved

2010 is achievable, and by all accounts, was an elite season. What you need to be looking at are targets - the reason Revis had 0 INTs and fewer pass breakups is due to QBs avoiding him.

He WAS being targeted in 2009 - you don’t get 31 pass breakups being opposite of the side QBs are targeting. The reason that season is special is that despite being targeted, he was still managing to breakup passes and causing INTs.

Jones was not targeted much this season and when he was, QB passer ratings were in the 60s when going his way, both in zone and man. Would it have been nice for him to get an INT even against limited targets? Sure, but he was simply not being targeted and when he was QBs didn’t find much success going his way.

Jones won’t be getting a historic contract - he’ll get market value for the way he played this season. You’re not replacing Jones’ production with freakin’ Lewis and Awuzie and certainly not Brown. You keep your best corner who is young unless you have a viable option.

He’s worth the money.

Of course not. I always believed he should be at CB. I like the guy I just know they can’t sign them all and they actually have depth at CB. Just being cap focused for Jerrys’s sake.

We have depth at CB? Lewis is not a known product and never beat out Awuzie - most of you go off his college highlight reel. Brown is inconsistent and has no business taking on even more of a starting role - we tried this, he’s simply not good enough and will be gone in a year.

You have no viable option to replace Jones - you sign your young, homegrown and good defensive players unless they are asking for unreasonable money.

Man, a lot of you are wishing for a 2013 defense again. How many children did Jerry have again? Flooding the forums with them.
