Byron Jones to Cornerback? If so, will they exercise option?

Yea ideally you’d want Awuzie and jones in base.

In nickle Awuzie,Jones , and Lewis in the slot.

In Dime Awuzie , Brown on the outside and Lewis and jones in slot.
They run alot of 3 safety looks in dime too. Unless he is starting, thats probably where you would see Woods subbed in.

Question is in that event, who are your 3 CB's. Im guessing Awuzie, Lewis and Jones

Good. I see us upgrading safety significantly with richard back there. Vaccaro and Derwin? :rolleyes:o_O

I think they should pick up his 5th year option.

Reason being, I think you want two more years of contract control after a position switch to determine what the players value is to you. The option is slighty over 6 million, which seems steep, but thats market for a mid tier CB. Its also guaranteed only for injury.

If Jones has a good season at CB, it gives you more time to make a decision on a long term contract. If he doesnt, he can be cut in the offseason.

Picking up the 5th year option makes sense unless the player is injury prone.
If he sucks, there is zero guaranteed money if you cut him. Only guaranteed if injured, via football injury, when March rolls around.

He will ride the bench. He's not good enough to beat out Awuzie or Lewis, nor is he good enough to beat out Brown or Woods in the slot.

Who are you saying we should bench?

jones is a highly talented individual. certainly a good dc and position coach can find a place for him. you can't have enough good d-backs in this league. they're hurt often.

Great. Awuzie/Lewis/Jones/Brown.
That group can be reeaally good.
Now get a top notch safety and let's roll!
Woods played slot CB last season, and did very well.

Once again, who are you benching to play Jones?

I hope they have an ultra special top secret plan for free agency because this is definitely not the draft to go looking for a safety, especially one with range.

Once you get past the first two-three rounds, it is very slim with a lot of undersized short types that would be matchup problems.

I agree, we should give tag him with the 5th year option for 2019. 247 Sports had a write up on this and based on the percentage of snaps that Byron Jones took in 2017 his option amount is only $6.27 million. We have until May 2nd to apply the option. I have a feeling that our secondary is going to look a lot better with Kris Richard coaching those guys. I still think that if he is used properly that Byron Jones could still end up being a stud in this league.

OK, listen carefully:

Lewis was the best outside CB on our roster last year. There was no close second. Now listen up again: Lewis was burned zero times.

So, why in HADES are you trying to put our best outside CB in the slot, and why are you benching him in our base D?

Lewis is a 9 at CB. Jones is a 6. I mean, it's not close. Not even remotely close.

Are you guys thinking before you say this stuff?

I would not be so fast to rule him out as a slot CB. I think he very well could beat out Brown and/or Woods. Jones is fast and can be a lock down coverage guy at times (especially excels against TEs in man coverage).

His weakness is zone coverage and he is simply not a strong/sure enough tackler at safety. I like him, Lewis, Auzie, Brown as our CBs and if we can get Derwin James at safety-- we would have the makings of a very good young secondary
