Florida defensive tackle Caleb Brantley was expecting to be drafted this week, with some projections having him going in the first round. But things have just changed dramatically.

Brantley was arrested in Gainesville for allegedly punching a woman, knocking her unconscious and knocking out a tooth. He is facing a misdemeanor count of simple battery.

The police report says the 307-pound Brantley punched the 120-pound victim in the face. Although the report says the victim pushed Brantley first, it says that the “use of force was clearly out of retaliation and not self defense” and that Brantley’s force “far exceeded what was reasonable or necessary.” Two witnesses saw Brantley punch the woman, police say.

The incident sounds similar to the arrest of Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon. That incident has surely affected Mixon’s draft stock, but Brantley’s stock is likely to drop even further. Mixon has spent the last three months meeting with NFL coaches and personnel executives and promising them that he is a changed man. Brantley simply doesn’t have the time to do that, with only days to go before the draft. Teams may also question whether they can ever trust Brantley to stay out of trouble if he can’t restrain himself from punching a woman when he knows the draft is approaching.

We’ll see this week whether any team is willing to draft Brantley at all, and if so how that team explains why it would take a chance on such a player.

If you want a guy like this on your team, you care about all the wrong things

This is from the McGinn series on defensive linemen:

4. CALEB BRANTLEY, Florida (6-2½, 306, 5.15, 2-3): “Of all the DTs, he probably is the best pass rusher,” said one scout. Fourth-year junior with a Wonderlic of 29. “He’s lazy,” said another scout. “Guy doesn’t always play hard. He’s got some penetration. Got some dog in him. He’s a definite potential bust guy.” Finished with 80 tackles (20½ for loss) and 5½ sacks. Involved in a bar altercation April 13 in Gainesville but after investigation one team has cleared him of wrongdoing. Weighed 330 out of high school in Crescent City, Fla. “Wasn’t in real good shape at pro day,” said a third scout. “He doesn’t bring it all the time. You’re going to have to kick him in the (expletive).” Much more interested in shooting gaps than anchoring against double teams. “I didn’t like his style of play,” said a fourth scout. “I didn’t like his toughness. He’s not that big. Doesn’t play heavy.”

The bolded is the incident where he hit the woman. If what was alleged and documented in the police report is true, what team would clear him? The Bengals?

Well, if he's a Free Agent...maybe. But how can you know better (29 wonderlic) than punching a 120lb woman, then do it anyway. That's a whole different kind of dumb.

Some are making too much of a point that the woman he punched out was 120. Doesn't matter if she was 120, 320 or 500 lbs. You should just know better, especially someone in his situation.

"Especially someone in his situation"...kettle meet pot!

What if she was 330lbs (like he is) and punching a 120lb man. Might be better to just run!

They won't, nor should they sign this clown. Once Greg Hardy's victims pics were unsealed I highly doubt you'll see Jerry & Co explore acquiring a domestic violence offender
