Caleb Williams claims he may not enter 2024 draft if doesn’t have chance to land up at a ‘desirable’ team

Yeah but look at the other side of the coin. He gets drafted to a crap team and doesn't even make it to 13 pro seasons.

David Carr was a better prospect than his brother Derek Carr......but one to a respectable team in the Raiders with some pieces. Then one to the Texans.

I am sure he is well aware the Cardinals are one of the worst organizations in pro football. Maybe he wants to avoid going there at all costs. Best case his career wont be all it could have been. Worst case a flat out disaster.
But it’s still more than likely to be another crap team at the top of the draft. And teams can always trade up so there are never any guarantees.

Arizona can always trade that pick for a ransom.they could in theory really rebuild in a hurry with trades and the draft.

He can always pull an Eli and refuse to play for them.

Reminds me of Eli Manning and John Elway when they were drafted

I can’t really blame him. He is an incredible talent, and some teams in this league seem to specialize in destroying rookie QBs careers, like Arizona, and I believe they’ll be battling for that #1 overall pick.

I've made this point: If I were a top quarterback, and say the first two picks belonged to the Jaguars and the Jets, why wouldn't you tell them that you have no interest in playing for them and tell them to trade the pick? Why would you go to a perennially bad team that has never developed a top quarterback?

It's one thing to play for a down team and then it's another to play for a franchise like the Cardinals. They were ranked at the bottom in almost every metric from player surveys. They have zero idea what they are doing in terms of their future.

I don't blame him. But the thing is, the Cardinals are so bad and no end in sight, they might have the #1 pick in the 2025 draft. And then what? I guess we could see a standoff where Williams and his camp threatens the Cardinals he won't play or sign with them if they draft him to try and scare them off or trade the pick for a ransom. Or a sign and trade. No idea how that would work. But if I was the Cardinals, I am not letting a college draft pick dictate what I do. I draft you and call your bluff.

I don't buy the NIL money being that big of a factor.

Say he plays football until his body gives out at 35, just for grins. Would you rather play 1 more college season and 13 pro seasons, or 2 more college seasons and 12 pro seasons? That extra pro season is going to be more highly compensated.
It gives him some semblance of control

Last game of the regular season is January 7

Deadline to enter the draft is after that...last year was January 16

Exactly, has someone told Caleb Williams that the team that drafts number 1 overall either this year or next year is in fact "Not A Desirable Team".
lol
There’s bad teams and then there’s the Cardinals organization. The family has always taken financial short cuts, like charging players for meals, required equipment, maintenance fees , etc.

And for those who will claim “poor spoiled athletes,” just understand that is not the norm for NFL franchises.

Athletes rarely have real leverage and Caleb’s ability to return to college next year is a one time option, and comes with risks. If he chooses that path, he risks injuries and another year of scouts picking apart flaws. His stock is incredibly high (and would probably stay that way next year), so he is taking a chance.

Apparently the Cardinals have the Texans pick as well next year. We might be looking at the first team ever in the history that will have the #1 and #2.
