Call your shot in February

It's still too early, I'm going to give up on Patrick Peterson and stick with Marcel Dareus for now. I think the Cowboys are going to address the CB position in the 2nd round and look for somebody who's fallen through the cracks.

The little voice in the back of my head still hasn't shut up yet about trading down and picking up Ingram, and it's driving me crazy, but I'll stick with Marcel Dareus for a while.

That little voice sounds like Daniel Snyder.

Peterson all the way

Why has everyone soured on Prince so much?

Scouting report doesn't sound that bad, and hes impressive in run support. That sounds like something that could be useful, no?

It's not that I soured on him. I just dont think he will ever be a playmaker if I'm using the right term. He is going to be a fundamentally sound player that you can put on the field right away and forget about. He's not going to lead the league in anything, he's not going to make pro bowls but he's going to be a very sound and solid part of the defense for 7 or 8 years till loses a step he does have to lose then he is going to turn into Kevin Smith post injury because his technique will no longer be enough.

He is simply not a sexy pick and if we go non sexy then I would much rather it be a big ugly up front on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.

I want my CB's taken in the top 10 to be playmakers.

I think Peterson is a pipe dream. BSPN ( I think it was helmet hair Kipper ) made a sound argument as to why he should go 2nd in the draft. Especially if Champ Bailey jumps ship..

9. Derek Sherrod OT Mississippi State

I'm pretty confident that his name is going to be considered at 9 if you look at the player. Look for him to get the Valley Ranch visit. If he played at Florida or Alabama, he would be viewed differently nationally. This guy should be the highest rated OT on Dallas' board, with what I know now. I bet that he has a first round grade from Dallas, and I bet he rises and goes before pick 20.

Again, if you trade down, you expose yourself to losing your player to Detroit, Philadelphia, New York Giants, or Indianapolis. If you move down into the teens, you may get jumped in the teens. OTs and QBs rise, and the Eagles and Colts are known for moving up to secure offensive linemen. Sherrod could protect Vick's blind side and fits their profile. If you trade down for Sherrod or Smith, you are taking a big risk, especially when there will not be any difference or razor thin difference in players picked from 7-20, imo. Taking a young, athletic offensive tackle, with upside and LT ability and ideal size, replaces the weakest player in your offensive line (Mark Colombo), provides insurance against losing Free in free agency, or provides insurance for an injured Free. It is a solid, safe investment at 9. It is an investment in your offensive skill players, too. It will put
Felix Jones, Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, and Tony Romo in better positions and give them more opportunities to be successful.

When I look at the vertical drafting of Sherrod VS Free, I see a player who can supplant Doug Free at LT and plug and play for Colombo with ease.

I think Sherrod, right now, represents the Cowboys version of the new age LT. You can make him stronger, but you can't teach his size and athletic ability. His height is perfect, and go look up the length of his arms. He is a great run blocker along the line pulling and can seal the edge with ease and get to the second level.

Look for Sherrod's stock to go up after the combine. He's going to go before pick 20. I would bet on it.

If Tyron Smith is 310 or 315 at the combine, he will soar up boards. He is already rising from what I've gathered. I'm more confident slotting Sherrod to Dallas at 9 right now.

WesBunting Wesley Bunting
Talked second scout since SB who talked about his team not even thinking Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara were in same breath #NFLDRAFT

Right now - Jorden or Darius. But would not be opposed to Smith after combine when he jumps up (if his weight is up).

Peterson if we decide to trade up.

Jordan or Quinn if we stay put.

OT if we trade down.

Yep. Prince is another strong candidate if he's still there at 9.

Cam Jordan, Robert Quinn or Tyron Smith.

Could live with Miller, Aldon Smith, Carimi, Sherrod.

I hope it isnt - a CB

This stuff is so going to change after the combine. Everyone will have new pet cats.

Hopefully, in this draft, we actually have a 'strategy' to improve our Offense and Defense. We can do BOTH by drafting the BPA OT in Rd 1 (i.e. Smith or Sherrod), BPA OG in Rd 2 (i.e. B. Ijalana), BPA NT in Rd 3, BPA CB in Rd 4, BPA big RB (i.e. John Clay 6'1" 260lbs) or FS (Teejay Johnson TCU 6'0" 194lbs) in Rd 5 and 6. This would allow the Boys to play 'smash-mouth' (i.e. ball control) football with the big boys (i.e. Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Ravens, Saints, Jets, Giants, & Patriots). It was also give our OL two new BIG BODIES and our defense a mammoth NT (by sliding Ratliff to DE).

If everyone remembers the 90's, the Boys HAD to best OL and DL in football and everyone copied our model (which included DL 'rotations' to keep everyone fresh and fast). Jerrah could also sign via Free Agency an athletic ILB to backup Sean Lee or Brookings and any other perceived 'depth' weakness.

Jason Garrett remembers the 90's Cowboys very well and hopefully has a PLAN in his mind to model THIS year's NFL Draft/free agency signings/off-season workouts after that team. He ONLY has to ensure Jerrah keeps HIS 'droolings' for an impact player to an Offensive Lineman. If he drops down a bit, we may even get an extra 3rd pick (to snatch up a hard nosed ILB).

If Patrick Peterson falls to #6..I am going to say we will move up and nab him..

If Peterson is off the board..I think we stay put at 9 and select Cam Jordan

I'm changing. It's still pre-combine, and it's still February.

If it's an OT, it will be Tyron Smith.

If it's a CB, it will be Brandon Williams.

If it's a DE, it will be Marcell Dareus or Cameron Jordan.

The Cowboys will not draft:

Robert Quinn
Von Miller
A.J. Green
Julio Jones
Cam Newton
Blaine Gabbert

There will probably be a big push to draft Williams, and if he runs good at the combine (4.3 good), he will get even more push.

I want to say Tyron Smith, but I know better.

I'll say Brandon Williams at 9, and I think Tyron Smith will have a chance to pull the upset. I think Smith trumps Jordan, but I"m not sure about Dareus. JMO

I'd rather take the top OT (Smith) and get a CB like Aaron Williams in the 2md round.

not trying to be a jerk..just trying to be clear..do you mean Brandon Harris? the Miami CB? If so, i think 9 is a little early for him..I wouldnt mind a trade down and taking him

also..after hearing Rob Ryan speak..I dont think we are going after Quinn or Miller either

You make some good points. Look at the offensive line play in the divisional round and when Kosier gets hurt and with a done Mark Colombo. The line is fading fast. The average age will be 33 next year, and I don't want to think about their play in November and December of next year. Davis and Gurode could use their potential replacements on the team and ready to go if called upon, imo. Kosier and Colombo need to be replaced now. Dallas needs an OT and LG now. It's too late for 3-4 year hand holding.

Dallas really has it's work cut out horizontally on this draft. Drafting Newman, Ware, Spears, Spencer, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins...Those were easy slam dunk draft picks or very high percentage picks. The Patriots traded out of round one after Dallas took Spencer. The Titans coveted Felix Jones, and the Cardinals really liked him. Jenkins was a top tier CB at 25.

It's such a deep CB draft, and OT is not nearly as deep. Defensive line is deep, too. Again, the horizontal challenge will be there in this draft, because you will have an OT, a DE, and a CB to choose from. I think the OT and DL need trumps the CB, because Terence Newman is a better player than Mark Colombo and Igor Olshansky. They better get it right, because continuing to play Mark Colombo and having no backup at LT (if Free is back) is playing with fire.

I really like what I'm reading about Aaron Williams from Texas. Bunting thinks he will fall to round 2. He's not the only 2nd round CB, either. You can get a good one in the third, too. The deep CB class and Newman should tilt that battle to DE VS OT. Tyron Smith has to be lights out to beat the defensive players, because the Cowboys evaluation on the offensive line is poor, self scouting the offensive line and the draft. Smith has to win Garrett and Houck to have any chance in that building.

Jordan or Dareus VS Smith

You are cool.

Yeah. Brandon Harris..You may be right. Bunting says that Harris will come off the board around 13-17. If he runs a 4.3, he could shoot up. Amukamara looks like a high 4.4 or low 4.5 guy to me. I could be wrong.

Sorry.

Dallas will not draft Prince Amkamara, imo. I left his name off. They will take Harris if they go CB, I think.

I read where Ryan Hill (CB) could go 2nd or 3rd if he runs a 4.4. He is from Miami, too.

I'm thinking if you want Smith or Harris, you may have to take them at 9, because the Lions need a LT and CB. The Texans could use a CB.

We will have to see how the CBs run, but I'd rather take a CB or OL than a safety in round 2. I think they will be better than the safety.

Even though I think 9 is a little early for Harris..I wouldnt be upset..he is my favorite CB in this class...I love Peterson..but would move him over to FS..

He looks like a really good athlete. He looks high cut, but he is more in line with Newman than Amukamara will ever be, imo. I prefer Harris over Amukamara, too. I'm just not sure taking a CB that high (in a deep CB draft) is the best way to build your team, especially since Dallas' strength is on the perimeter of the defense (4 first round picks). Is that guy Champ Bailey (Peterson)? Is that guy Terence Newman at 9? Those are legit questions. If the answer is yes, then you have a "problem". If no, then you should look to strengthen the weakness of your team for sure, the offensive line or defensive line.

I want Smith at OT, but someone who wants a DE has a good argument, too. I just think the skill players on offense will determine how far the team ultimately goes, and an OT like Smith puts those players in a better position to succeed. Smith at 9 and Aaron Williams at 41 would be very good, imo.

Can the Cowboys trade Roy E. for Aaron. LOL :)

The Cowboys paid a lot of attention to Curtis Brown (2nd-3rd). He played at Texas, too.

What about drafting Smith at 9 and moving up a little for Aaron Williams? Williams is a little raw, but you have Newman to buy you some time. Bunting compared him to Peterson from an athletic stand point. Plus, he was coached at Texas by a Nick Saban disciple.

We agree on Miller and Quinn.

Is Miller going to beat Ware out?

Spencer is still one of Dallas' best defensive players, and the team gave up Meachem and Bowe to get him. I've read where Quinn may be a better 43 player. Is he going to come in and just take Spencer's job. What about playing the run and playing coverage. I think the character issue or that bad choice and his past medical and Spencer and OL and DL and CB trump him.
