Was listening I think to P. King last night and he said we have 138 mil in cap dollars committed in 2010. The premise here is that there will be no cap in 2010 and Jerry either knows it, or at the very least believes it.

I've had some interest/concerns for over a year now in just how much furture cap dollars we're tying up.

Anyway, here are my questions. Answer what you may.

1) Who's under contract in 2009 and for how much?
2) Who's under contract in 2010 and for how much?
3) Are we in trouble in either 2009 or 10, especially if thier is a 2010 cap.

My concern is that we have like 20 guys using up 138 mil in 2010.

You're never in real cap trouble...see Commanders and others...you merely dump guys who are making too much and sign others whose contracts are backloaded. I think Jerry and Steven have been about as smart about the cap as anyone in the NFL.

I understand that.

However, I'd still like to know where we are.

Not always so easy or even beneficial to cut people in order to free up cap space.

The 138 mil surprised me for a few reasons.
1) How many players could we have under contract for 2010? 15, 20 at most.
2) How high can the cap be in 2010 if thier is one? 140mil, maybe 150mil.

OMT - All these numbers don't include Ware who is sure to be a 10 mil a year player!

It's Stephen, and also... no.

This is one of those lies that gets parroted around forever. Jerry and his son have always been terrible cap/money value managers.

We have 33 players under contract for 2010. Some of those will void, of course, but that will lower that $138 million. Zach Thomas, for instance, is on the books for $5.85 million that season -- but it's just funny money so he didn't have to sign a contract for one year, $2 million (which is what he really got). Four years for $18.8 million sounds much better, but the final three years will automatically void.

Our total commitment for 2010 is irrelevant right now because there is no cap for that year, so none of the contracts have been structured to minimize the cap hit that year. If we get to 2010 and there is a cap, all of the bonuses will be prorated out, many of the base salaries will be converted and prorated, etc., and it will be back to business as usual. But there is no reason to reduce the 2010 cap charges right now. If there's no cap in 2010, you WANT those numbers to be as big as possible, just in case the cap comes back in 2011, 2012 or later (even though the NFLPA says that would never happen, they might change their mind if salaries go way down).

We're in good cap shape this year and next, and there is no cap beyond that. So cap-wise, there's really nothing to worry about. On the field is another matter.

If there is a cap, what is it likely to be in 2010?

Nobody knows. There are all sorts of variables involved, not the least of which is the economy in general.

Not that I expect you to know everything but what's that likely to look like in 2010? ;)
