I imagine that you all have your own take on Romo, but his style of play is IMO somewhat unique. Im aware that a lot of his signature moves are the product of teammates. I remember my father describing some of the player from yesteryear, my dad isnt around anymore and I wonder if he reminds you of anyone from back in the day.
Kenny Stabler? Fran Tarkenton?

Steve Young.

Really? I can somewhat remember him playing and thought he was much more of a strong runner, not to mention lefty.

He was nifty in the pocket, and could run just like Romo could and did back in his day. Gritty player, lefty righty doesn't really matter, but they were about the same height, that's my opinion. Young was trashed too until he finally won a SB.

Your dad had it right. Romo's ability to extend a play is very Tarkenton like. But Romo also has a lot of Favre's gambling style as well. And he has one of the quickest releases since Marino.

I do not see the similarity to Steve Young. Unlike Romo, Young ran to run, while Romo runs to pass.

I don't think he is anything like Young. When Steve ran he ran to gain yards. Tony is much more like Tarkington in that he runs to keep the play alive always looking downfield.

Favre had a cannon for an arm, Romo's arm is not even close.

Bat, I think if I were in grade school I would say you owe me coke or something...

This is who I would have referred to as well. Steve was elusive like Tony and made plays out of virtually nothing. Sure.. He was a stronger runner and a lefty but in terms of style Tony reminds me very much of him.

Romo is not as good as Montana, but their styles are more similar, in my opinion, than any of the other guys mentioned. Montana was more calm in his play, but the way they move around the pocket is very similar, and Montana didn't have a rocket for an arm either, but had an arm strong enough to make all the throws.

True.
Steve Young was one of the fastest QBs to ever play in the NFL. Not RG3 or Vick speed, but blazing speed for a QB nevertheless.

Thats a strong statement. I can see some of what you are saying though.

We are discussing playing style, not necessarily arm strength. Romo's arm strength is underrated in any event. Romo had a stronger arm than Tarkenton but Tarkenton was much more elusive in the open field.

Tarkenton had the athletic ability to rush for yards like Young/Vick (which he did) but his first instinct was to bide time to throw, like Romo. They both had very good pocket awareness (could sense when a defender was breathing down their necks) and move to find better throwing lanes.

Young ran to gain yards first and foremost. He was the same size and similar arm strength, but Young did not have Romo's quick release and did not gamble with his arm as much as he did with his legs. He was much more elusive straight ahead runner than Romo.

It's funny that I've never thought about it, but the Tarkenton comparison is a good one.

I agree more along the line of Tarkenton with a little bit of Bobby Douglass(southpaw) from the Chicago Bears. Fran was really small more like Doug Fluitie and threw a wobbling ball. I think Tony is more balanced and a better athlete both had trouble throwing the really long ball IMO (Tony after the preseason game about five years ago in Denver lost his touch on the long ball, I can remember TO being wide open and Tony never got it close and Brandon Marshall/ Jay Cutler outplaying them hitting in stride.)
