Didn't see this coming.

Guy won the national JC Championship while at Blinn, won the NCAA title at Auburn and a Heisman, a former NFL MVP.

What next?

I have never been a Newton fan. He was great in college mostly due to sheer size combined with running ability.
But his NFL career?

He's a career rating of 85.8. 60% completion rate. Once he lost the running ability he was on borrowed time.

Not at all surprised he was let go.

The writing was on the wall when they drafted Mac Jones 15th overall. Cam wasn't good last year, he was really bad on Sunday, and seems to have an issue following rules. I can't believe he's lasted in NE this long.

He jumped the shark after he walked out of the Super Bowl post game press conference following the loss.

Anyone surprised at this does not know much about football.

Dude, I can talk about players you have never even heard of so cool your crap, ok? Nobody saw this coming before week one.

Everybody knew it was just a matter of time, just not right now, you have to be told this?

Ever notice I never start anything, just a counter puncher. Always cool with those who are cool. Be a punk I treat you like one.

Didn't see that Newton thread over at Fan Zone, did think that was for Cowboy talk.

I think the biggest surprise (the reason he was cut also) is how well Mac Jones has played. Not sure many saw that coming, especially Cam. Hell, he was just talking about mentoring the kid a couple of weeks ago. Not sure what's going with Cam. According to Pats players and coaches, NO player worked as hard as he did last season, word is he was burning 14-16 hours around the team. What really stands out though, is one of the WRs commended him for his hard work but in the same sentence criticized him for not playing smart.

Everyone knows those preseason defenses can't be taken seriously, any QB should look good. I think we saw a knee jerk reaction here, not really thought out. YES....Jones was going to become Da Man but ya don't do it this way. Belichick simply got pissed.

When ya have a guy like Newton ya ease the rookie in not unlike Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady..ah was suppose to be eased in.

Why?

I agree but another side of the coin is to go with the rookie knowing you're going to have some growing pains. What Belichick got pissed about? My first time hearing this......

Here ya go...

Colin Cowherd: “Cam has always been bizarrely coddled by the media. I can never figure out why the media chooses to support some players and not others. Lamar Jackson gets more crap – the guy wins 80% of his games and he gets better every year. Cam has never had back-to-back winning seasons, but he’s been bizarrely coddled by the American sports media his entire career. He’s a 59.5% completion percentage, banged up guy, with two COVID issues with the Patriots and they let him go. I was told this morning by a source that I trust that the COVID stuff was the last straw… They were DONE with it. In the end, Ron Rivera and Bill Belichick, both defensive coaches, both smart coaches, both successful coaches, both been in Super Bowls, and both bailed on Cam. They’re both NO NONSENSE head coaches. The quarterback is the position that HAS to be reliable. I don’t want to hear this morning that Mac Jones won this job because he was good against fourth-stringers in the preseason. You don’t go from back up to being really the only viable starting quarterback on a team because you were great against the fourth-stringers. Don’t kid yourself, this COVID nonsense – don’t listen to anybody – I got it sourced, it drove them nuts. I said last week that New England leaked the story last week about how ‘disappointed’ they were with Cam. They were unhappy with this COVID snafu by Cam. New England only leaks what they want out. When they moved off Cam they wanted you to know that it was on HIM, it’s not us, and they’re pissed. This wasn’t about Mac Jones winning the job playing well against fourth-stringers. Did you notice 4-5 veteran New England players – James White, Matthew Slater, Brian Hoyer, Dont’a Hightower – all Belichick’s guys, all had leaked stories last week saying how Mac Jones was so ‘mature’ and that he ‘won the locker room.’ You think that was a coincidence? No, they made sure veterans said nice things about Mac Jones. We all knew the Cam thing was a ‘Band-Aid.’ I thought it was a weird fit but I thought he was coachable and it’s a bridge year after Brady. With the COVID thing and Mac Jones playing well in the preseason it was just ‘let’s rip the Band-Aid off and let it go.’ What is the only thing that Belichick truly loved about Brady? It wasn’t his arm, it wasn’t his athletic ability, it wasn’t his size, it was Tom’s reliability. We all make decisions – when you agitate you’ll get released fast.” (Full Audio Above)

I didn't expect Cam to be cut. But do we really know the reason? Maybe Cam didn't want to be there as a backup?

LOL, that could be it too. :)

Damn......willing to bet they gave him a chance to fix it but he refused. Either way, thanks for the update...

Glad he's gone. He was outplayed in both practice & the preseason games, Mac got the majority of the meaningful snaps and showed he could lead the team.

Cam is a charismatic guy, great teammate, but his skills have eroded enough that he wasn't an asset to the team. He was a liability.

Would rather roll with the rookie than spend another season treading water for no reason.
